A fresher's employment CV and an experienced candidate's employment CV can use similar headings while giving different evidence priority. The useful question is what the reader needs to understand first. This guide compares two fictional candidates applying for the same type of operations role, with complete text skeletons and a worksheet for deciding what to include. The examples are original teaching material, not verified candidate histories or an assurance of selection.
Here, “CV” means an employment document requested by an employer. Some academic or research applications require a different, fuller record. Check the instructions before selecting a format. The document-choice guide and CV-to-resume comparison explain that distinction more fully.
Compare evidence rather than ages or labels
Imagine a fictional vacancy for an operations associate. It involves maintaining records, coordinating requests, checking discrepancies and preparing updates. Candidate A, Asha, is a recent graduate with a supervised college project. Candidate B, Dev, has employment experience in an administrative team. Their documents should explain how their evidence relates to those duties. Neither should copy the other's experience simply because the layout looks professional.
Harvard's resume guidance supports clear, factual presentation of relevant experience. The layouts and examples below are our own application of that limited principle. They are not a universal Indian format, a legal standard or an ATS guarantee.
| Evidence | How the two examples differ |
|---|---|
| Strongest work | Asha has a supervised college project; Dev has work in an office team. |
| Context | Asha names the academic setting and her task; Dev names the employer, role, dates and scope. |
| Early section | Asha can lead with the project; Dev can lead with recent relevant work. |
| Education | Asha may add useful coursework; Dev keeps the degree and reduces unrelated course detail. |
| Main risk | Asha must not label college work as a job; Dev must not claim the whole team's results. |
A candidate with relevant employment and unrelated recent education may lead with employment. A career changer may need a focused project earlier. Use the evidence, not a rule that every fresher or every experienced applicant must follow identical section order.

This is an editable text example. The bracketed fields must be replaced or removed. The project is explicitly academic and supervised.
Asha [Surname]
[City] · [professional email] · [phone, if appropriate]
Target role: Operations Associate
Recent graduate with academic project experience maintaining structured records, checking incomplete entries and presenting findings to a faculty supervisor. Interested in administrative work involving accurate information and clear updates.
Relevant Academic Project
Workshop Records Review · [College] · [actual dates]
Compared registration and attendance entries in a supervised college project; listed missing information for the faculty coordinator to resolve.
Used spreadsheet filters to group discrepancies and prepared a short summary of the checks performed. Did not alter uncertain entries without clarification.
Education
[Degree, institution, completion date]
[Relevant coursework only if useful and accurate]
Skills Demonstrated
Spreadsheet filtering and record checks, supported by the project above; written summaries and clarification requests.
Additional Experience
[Relevant activity or internship with accurate role, setting and dates; omit if none]
Notice what is absent: an invented employer, an unmeasured efficiency percentage and a claim of managing a department. Asha can explain the workbook and her process. She should not include a project link unless it is public, permission to share it exists and it does not expose participants' personal information.
Experienced CV: a complete fictional skeleton
Dev's example leads with employment because it supplies the most direct evidence. The company and dates remain placeholders; do not treat the example as a real work history.
Dev [Surname]
[City] · [professional email] · [appropriate contact information]
Operations and Administrative Support
Administrative professional with experience maintaining request records, investigating incomplete entries and preparing team updates. Seeking a role with responsibility for accurate operational information and coordinated follow-up.
Employment
Administrative Assistant · [Employer] · [actual dates]
Maintained the team's request register and checked new entries for missing reference details before passing exceptions to the responsible colleague.
Prepared weekly status summaries from the register, separating completed items from requests awaiting clarification. Final reporting decisions remained with the team lead.
Documented the record-checking steps for a colleague joining the team. The document described the existing process; it was not a redesign of the department's systems.
Earlier Employment
[Role, employer and dates]
[One or two relevant, verified contributions; reduce unrelated detail]
Education
[Degree, institution, completion date]
Relevant Tools and Skills
[Tools actually used, connected to the work described above]
If Dev has a measured result, he can add it with a clear baseline and period. Without those records, the contribution remains useful as a description of work. A statement about improving “overall productivity” would not be supported merely because he created a checking document.
What changes between the two versions
The fresher version spends more space explaining the project setting because a reader cannot infer workplace responsibility from a college title. The experienced version uses employer and role context, then explains scope and outputs. Both versions use action statements and avoid unsupported labels. Neither relies on a paragraph saying the candidate is motivated, dynamic or an ideal fit.
The distinction is not that freshers need objectives and experienced applicants need summaries. Either opening can become empty. Use a short introduction only if it clarifies the application; otherwise begin with the strongest relevant section. If an opening repeats the job title and every skill below it, remove the repetition.
Build your own evidence inventory
For each potential entry, write five fields: setting, dates, responsibility, output and relevance to the vacancy. Add a sixth field for a supporting record or someone who can verify the work. That record might be a report, repository, supervisor feedback or employment document; it need not be attached to the CV.
Then classify the entry as include, shorten or omit. Include direct evidence for important duties. Shorten context that is useful but less relevant. Omit claims you cannot substantiate, confidential details you cannot share and repeated statements that add no new information. Preserve a truthful chronology; do not disguise gaps by inventing dates or changing role titles.
Handle mixed backgrounds honestly
An internship belongs under its actual setting and dates. A paid part-time job remains employment even when unrelated; use proportionate detail rather than hiding it behind an invented title. Independent learning can be listed as learning or a personal project, with accurate completion status. A course certificate does not automatically establish professional competence in every tool covered.
A career changer can place a relevant recent project before older unrelated employment, while retaining the employment history. A returning professional can show current evidence without explaining private circumstances in detail. If an application form requests information not normally shown in the CV, supply it through the instructed channel rather than making the CV a collection of all possible personal details.
Make the format readable and test it
Use descriptive headings, consistent dates and text that remains selectable after export. Choose the file type requested by the employer. Reopen the final file, check every page and copy the text into a plain-text view to inspect reading order. This can reveal missing text or confusing columns; it cannot prove that an employer's ATS will rank the document well.
For further formatting checks, see the ATS-friendly format guide. For detailed treatment of employment progression, use the experienced-professional resume guide. This page focuses on comparing evidence priorities rather than duplicating those broader guides.
Questions about fresher and experienced CVs
Must a fresher CV be one page?
Follow the employer's directions and keep detail proportionate. A page count cannot determine whether relevant evidence is present or whether an unnecessary section should be removed.
Can a fresher use an experience section?
Yes, when the setting is accurately named. Internships, employment, volunteering and projects should not be relabelled as equivalent kinds of work.
Should an experienced candidate remove education?
Keep relevant qualifications and required eligibility information. Reduce unnecessary coursework when employment provides stronger evidence, but follow the application's requirements.
Is this an academic CV format?
No. These examples are employment documents. An academic or research application may require publications, teaching, research and other sections specified by the institution.
