RBI Assistant Exam 2026: Official Dates, Pattern and Next Steps

The RBI Assistant examination held in 2026 belongs to the Reserve Bank's Assistant – Panel Year 2025 recruitment. Its advertisement was published on 16 February 2026, the preliminary examination ran in April 2026, and on 24 September 2026 the Bank published roll numbers provisionally shortlisted after the Main Examination. If you searched for "RBI Assistant 2026 dates", this is the cycle you need to understand.

This guide sets out the official timeline, eligibility rules and examination scheme from RBI's own notices, then gives you a date tracker and two worked checks you can reuse for the next cycle. It does not predict a future notification date or a cut-off.

Checked against RBI notices on 9 October 2026. Always confirm on Opportunities@RBI, which RBI says is the only place it publishes call letters, interview schedules and results.

Sources: the advertisement dated 16 February 2026, the 10 April 2026 notice, the 20 April 2026 notice and the 24 September 2026 shortlist notice. RBI's results page also lists a prelims marksheet for the examination "held on April 11, 13 and 30, 2026".

The 24 September list is not a final selection list. RBI states that it is provisional and that every candidate must clear the LPT, be found medically fit and produce acceptable documents. Shortlisted candidates should follow the document and form instructions in that notice.

Is a newer Assistant advertisement out? When we checked the RBI vacancies page on 9 October 2026, the latest Assistant recruitment listed was this Panel Year 2025 cycle. Until RBI publishes a new advertisement, any month you see quoted for the next notification is a guess.

Who could apply: the rules that decide eligibility

The eligibility rules below are quoted from the Panel Year 2025 advertisement. The next advertisement may change them, so re-read the new one rather than relying on these.

  • Age: 20 to 28 years on 1 February 2026, meaning born not earlier than 2 February 1998 and not later than 1 February 2006. The upper limit was relaxed by 5 years for SC/ST (to 33), 3 years for OBC (to 31), and 10, 13 or 15 years for PwBD candidates depending on category.
  • Education: a bachelor's degree in any discipline with at least 50% marks in aggregate (pass class for SC/ST/PwBD candidates), plus knowledge of word processing on a PC.
  • Percentage rule: RBI calculates the percentage over all subjects in all semesters or years, and ignores fractions. Its own example: 49.99% is treated as less than 50%.
  • Language: you must be proficient in the language of the state, or one of the states, covered by the Recruiting Office you apply to. You can apply to only one office.

Worked check 1: does your percentage qualify?

This is an illustrative calculation, not a real candidate.

  • A graduate scored 1,489 out of 3,000 aggregate marks across all semesters. 1,489 ÷ 3,000 = 49.63%. That is below 50%, so a general-category candidate would not meet the minimum.
  • Another scored 1,500 out of 3,000. 1,500 ÷ 3,000 = 50.00%, which meets the minimum.

If your university awards a CGPA and does not publish its own conversion rule, the advertisement gives a table: 5.75 on a 10-point scale is treated as 50%.

The examination scheme in this advertisement

Test of English Language404030 minutes
Test of Numerical Ability404030 minutes
Test of General Awareness404025 minutes
Test of Computer Knowledge404020 minutes
Total200200135 minutes

Three rules matter for strategy:

  1. Negative marking: one quarter of a mark is deducted for each wrong answer in both the preliminary and main examinations.
  2. Sectional qualifying: RBI says a candidate "has to qualify in each part of the Objective test separately". A strong total cannot rescue a failed section.
  3. Shortlisting ratios: roughly 10 times the vacancies are called from the prelims and roughly 2 times from the Main for the LPT, subject to availability. The LPT is mandatory and qualifying; candidates not proficient in the official or local language are disqualified.

Older articles often show a 160-question Main paper or a combined "Reasoning and Computer Aptitude" section. That does not match this advertisement, which lists Computer Knowledge as a separate 40-mark test.

Worked check 2: what negative marking does to a section

Illustrative only. In the 40-mark Main Reasoning test, suppose you answer 34 questions and get 28 right and 6 wrong.

  • Marks for correct answers: 28 × 1 = 28
  • Deduction: 6 × 0.25 = 1.5
  • Section score: 28 − 1.5 = 26.5 out of 40

Had you left four of those wrong answers blank, the score would be 28 − (2 × 0.25) = 27.5. Use your mock analysis to see whether guessing is helping or hurting you, test by test.

Pay and fees stated in the advertisement

RBI states a starting basic pay of ₹29,000 a month in the Assistant scale, with an initial monthly gross of approximately ₹58,514 without House Rent Allowance. HRA of 15% of pay is paid additionally if you do not stay in Bank accommodation. The advertisement says recruits are governed by the Defined Contribution New Pension Scheme, in addition to gratuity. Treat any "in-hand" figure you see elsewhere as an estimate that depends on your city and deductions.

The fee was ₹450 plus 18% GST for General, OBC and EWS candidates, and ₹50 plus 18% GST (intimation charges only) for SC, ST, PwBD and ex-servicemen candidates. RBI says fees are not refunded under any circumstances, and a separate ₹200 charge applied for using the edit window.

Two habits help. First, record the date on which you checked each entry, because tentative dates move. Second, keep the advertisement PDF and every later notice together, since RBI notes that corrigenda appear only on its website.

How to use the time before the next notification

You cannot plan around an announced date that does not exist yet, but you can prepare for the published scheme:

  • Build the five Main tests, not just three prelims tests. Computer Knowledge and General Awareness carry 80 of the 200 Main marks in this scheme.
  • Practise under sectional timers. Each test has its own time limit, so a full-length mock without sectional timing will mislead you.
  • Keep a dated awareness file. Banking and economy news is easier to revise when every note carries its date and source. Our current affairs hub can be one input, alongside official RBI press releases.
  • Check the language requirement early. If you plan to apply to an office outside your home state, confirm now that you can read, write, speak and understand its language.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an interview for RBI Assistant?

Not in this advertisement. Selection was by the online Main Examination merit, subject to qualifying in the LPT, medical fitness and document verification.

Can final-year students apply?

The advertisement assesses education "as on 01/02/2026" and takes the date of passing from the marksheet or provisional certificate. If your result is not declared by the date in the next advertisement, you should assume you are not eligible for that cycle.

Where will the next notification appear?

On the RBI website and Opportunities@RBI. RBI also warns about fake appointment letters sent from look-alike domains, so verify any message against those pages.
