Exam structure (Development Assistant)
Phase I – Preliminary (60 minutes, 100 marks)
| Test | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| English Language | 40 | 40 | 20 min |
| Numerical Ability | 30 | 30 | 20 min |
| Reasoning | 30 | 30 | 20 min |
The prelims is qualifying only. Candidates must score sufficiently high in each test and in aggregate, and are shortlisted for the Main in a ratio of up to 1:25 of vacancies.
Phase II – Main (135 minutes, 200 marks)
| Test | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reasoning | 30 | 30 | 30 min |
| Quantitative Aptitude | 30 | 30 | 30 min |
| General Awareness (with special reference to agriculture, rural development and banking) | 50 | 50 | 25 min |
| Computer Knowledge | 40 | 40 | 20 min |
| English (Descriptive): essay, précis, report/letter | 3 | 50 | 30 min |
The descriptive paper is typed on the computer: one essay (20 marks, from three choices), one report or letter (15 marks, from two choices) and one précis (15 marks), in a combined 30 minutes. Cut-offs may apply to individual tests and to the total.
For Development Assistant (Hindi), Numerical Ability and Quantitative Aptitude are replaced by a Professional Knowledge (Hindi/English) test, with a slightly different main exam split.
Negative marking: one-quarter of a question's marks is deducted for each wrong answer in the objective tests of both phases.
Language Proficiency Test
The LPT is in the official language of the state you applied for. Candidates who studied that language as a subject in Class 10 or 12 are exempt on submitting proof; others take the test after the Main result. Failing the LPT means no appointment, even if you are in the select list.
Pay and benefits (as stated in the 2026 advertisement)
- Starting basic pay of ₹23,100 a month (including two advance increments) in the scale ₹20,700–₹55,700.
- Initial monthly gross emoluments of approximately ₹46,500, including DA, HRA, city compensatory allowance and transport allowance as admissible.
- Perquisites listed include residential accommodation subject to availability, medical reimbursement, leave travel concession once in two years and interest-free festival advance, as per eligibility.
Worked example: clearing sectional cut-offs in the Main
Illustrative calculation using the 2026 marking (1 mark per objective question, −0.25 per wrong answer):
| Test | Correct | Wrong | Score |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reasoning (30) | 20 | 6 | 20 − 1.5 = 18.5 |
| Quantitative Aptitude (30) | 15 | 9 | 15 − 2.25 = 12.75 |
| General Awareness (50) | 32 | 10 | 32 − 2.5 = 29.5 |
| Computer Knowledge (40) | 28 | 8 | 28 − 2 = 26 |
| Objective total | 86.75 / 150 |
Add the descriptive score (out of 50) for the Main total. The point of the exercise: NABARD may apply cut-offs to each test, so a weak Quantitative Aptitude score could disqualify you even with a strong total. Spread preparation across all tests rather than banking on one.
Preparation plan for the next notification
| Phase | Focus |
|---|---|
| Foundation (8 weeks) | English grammar and reading; arithmetic; reasoning puzzles and series |
| Main-specific (6 weeks) | General awareness on agriculture, rural development and banking schemes, using official sources; computer knowledge |
| Writing (ongoing) | One timed essay, one letter/report and one précis each week, typed rather than handwritten |
| Language | If you did not study your target state's official language in Class 10 or 12, start learning it now for the LPT |
Checklist before you apply

- Confirm your degree percentage (50% for general candidates) on the reference date.
