The Indian Forest Service (IFS, often written IFoS to avoid confusion with the Indian Foreign Service) is an All India Service that manages forests, wildlife and the environment. Recruitment is through UPSC's Indian Forest Service Examination, which shares its first stage with the Civil Services prelims. This guide explains eligibility, the exam structure and the timeline using UPSC's official documents, and shows how to plan if you are aiming for the 2027 cycle.
Sources: UPSC's Indian Forest Service Examination 2026 notice (No. 06/2026-IFoSE) and UPSC's annual calendar for 2027, checked on 9 October 2026.
How the IFS exam is structured
| Stage | What it is |
|---|---|
| 1. Screening test | The Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination: two objective papers, 400 marks in total. Marks are not counted in final merit |
| 2. IFS (Main) written | Six conventional (descriptive) papers |
| 3. Interview / Personality Test | 300 marks, no minimum qualifying marks |
Because the screening test is common, candidates apply once and can be shortlisted separately for the Civil Services (Main) and the IFS (Main) on different cut-offs. For IFS, about twelve to thirteen times the number of vacancies are admitted to the Main, and about twice the number of vacancies are called for interview.

The 2027 cycle: dates to note

Eligibility (2026 rules)
Age: at least 21 and under 32 years on 1 August of the exam year. For 2026, that meant born not earlier than 2 August 1994 and not later than 1 August 2005. Upper age relaxation includes 5 years for SC/ST and 3 years for OBC candidates, with further relaxations listed in the notice for categories such as ex-servicemen and persons with disabilities.
Education: a bachelor's degree with at least one of these subjects: Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science, Botany, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics or Zoology; or a bachelor's degree in Agriculture, Forestry or Engineering, from a recognised university (or an equivalent qualification). Candidates awaiting results may apply under the conditions in the notice.
This is the main difference from the Civil Services Examination, which accepts a degree in any discipline. A B.A. or B.Com graduate without one of the listed subjects is not eligible for IFS, even though they can take CSE.
Attempts: six for general candidates; nine for OBC candidates; no limit for SC/ST candidates within the age limit; nine for persons with benchmark disability in the General and EWS categories. An attempt at the prelims counts as an attempt at the examination.
Physical standards: candidates must meet the medical and physical standards in Appendix III of the IFS Examination Rules.
IFS (Main) written papers
| Paper | Subject | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| I | General English | 300 |
| II | General Knowledge | 300 |
| III & IV | Optional subject 1 (two papers) | 200 + 200 |
| V & VI | Optional subject 2 (two papers) | 200 + 200 |
| Written total | 1,400 | |
| Interview | 300 | |
| Grand total | 1,700 |
Optional subjects (choose any two): Agriculture, Agricultural Engineering, Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science, Botany, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Forestry, Geology, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Statistics and Zoology.
Combinations not allowed: Agriculture with Agricultural Engineering, Agriculture with Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science, Agriculture with Forestry, Chemistry with Chemical Engineering, Mathematics with Statistics, and more than one of the engineering subjects (Agricultural, Chemical, Civil, Mechanical).
Worked example: choosing your two optionals
Illustrative profiles:
| Your degree | Possible pair | Check |
|---|---|---|
| B.Sc. (Botany, Zoology, Chemistry) | Botany + Zoology | Allowed; both overlap with your degree |
| B.Tech (Civil) | Civil Engineering + Mathematics | Allowed (only one engineering subject) |
| B.Sc. Agriculture | Agriculture + Botany | Allowed; Agriculture + Forestry would not be |
| B.Sc. (Mathematics, Statistics, Physics) | Mathematics + Physics | Allowed; Mathematics + Statistics would not be |
Your optionals carry 800 of the 1,400 written marks (four papers of 200), so picking subjects you have studied in depth matters more here than in the Civil Services Main, where the optional is 500 of 1,750.
A preparation plan for the 2027 attempt
| Period | Focus |
|---|---|
| Now to December 2026 | Confirm eligibility; fix your two optionals; build CS Prelims GS foundations |
| January to May 2027 | Prelims focus (GS Paper I and the qualifying CSAT), while keeping one optional topic active each week |
| June to October 2027 | Full IFS Main preparation: complete both optionals, General English writing practice, General Knowledge |
| November 2027 | IFS (Main), as per the calendar |
Common mistakes
- Applying without an eligible degree. Check the subject list before investing a year.
- Choosing a forbidden optional combination. The notice lists them explicitly.
- Treating IFS as an afterthought to CSE. The Main is a different exam with 800 marks of optional papers.
- Ignoring physical and medical standards in the rules until after the written stages.
The Indian Forest Service suits science, agriculture and engineering graduates who want a field-based career in conservation and resource management. Check the official notice early, pick optionals that match your degree, and plan for both the common prelims and a demanding, optional-heavy Main.
