TET books & study material
There is no single TET. CTET is national and each state runs its own — UPTET, HTET, REET, MPTET and the rest — all built on the same NCTE framework of Paper 1 for classes 1–5 and Paper 2 for classes 6–8, 150 questions for 150 marks. This list separates the books that travel across all of them from the sections where a state-specific book is the only correct buy.

This is the section worth buying properly, because it is the one that transfers. Piaget, Vygotsky, inclusive education and learning theory are examined the same way whether you sit CTET, UPTET or REET — so one good CDP book serves every attempt you ever make, across states and across years.

Every TET splits its language sections roughly half comprehension and half language pedagogy, and candidates reliably prepare the first and ignore the second. What does change by state is which languages are offered — Hindi and English almost everywhere, plus the state language in most southern and eastern TETs — so confirm your options in the notification before buying.

Paper 1: maths + EVS · Paper 2: your subject track
Content questions across every TET are drawn from the level you would teach, which means NCERT is both the correct source and free. Paper 1 covers maths and EVS; Paper 2 replaces them with a subject block — usually a choice between Maths & Science and Social Studies. Buy a guide for the pedagogy layer NCERT does not carry, not for the content itself.

Varies · the section that does not transfer
This is the part worth being blunt about. CTET has no state GK section; most state TETs do, and several add state-specific environment or language content. A generic "TET guide" cannot cover Rajasthan's REET syllabus and Uttar Pradesh's at the same time — so once you know which TET you are sitting, buy one state guide and stop reading generic material for that section.

Where books stop
Most wasted TET spending comes from buying generic material for a state-specific paper, or a second CDP book instead of practising the one you own. Fix the exam first: CTET is national and accepted across states, while a state TET is usually accepted only in that state. Then buy one CDP book, use free NCERT for content, add one state guide, and put everything else into previous-year papers and timed practice — all TETs are 150 questions in 150 minutes with no negative marking, so there is no reason to leave anything unattempted.

Common questions
It depends which TET. Child Development and Pedagogy is examined almost identically across CTET and every state TET, so one good CDP book — Arihant or Shalini Punjabi — serves all of them. Content comes from free NCERT textbooks. Only the state GK and state language sections need a state-specific guide, and that is the one purchase you should not generalise.
CTET is conducted nationally by CBSE and is accepted by central schools and, in most cases, by states as well. A state TET is generally valid for teaching posts in that state only. If you are willing to move, CTET keeps more doors open; if you are targeting one state's recruitment, its own TET may be the faster route. Check the current notification, since state acceptance rules change.
Every TET built on the NCTE framework runs two papers — Paper 1 for teaching classes 1 to 5 and Paper 2 for classes 6 to 8 — each with 150 multiple-choice questions for 150 marks. Child Development and Pedagogy and two language sections are compulsory in both papers; the remaining sections differ by paper and by state. Confirm the marks, duration and any negative marking against your state's notification.
For pedagogy and content, yes — that material is common ground and it is why CTET books are the most widely sold. For the state GK, state environment and regional language sections, no. Use CTET books for the transferable half and a state guide for the rest rather than buying two full sets.
NCERT textbooks are genuinely free from ncert.nic.in and cover the content half of every TET. Previous-year papers are published free by most conducting bodies, including CBSE for CTET.
