CDP is the only section common to both papers and the one most candidates lose marks on, because it rewards applied understanding of Piaget, Vygotsky and inclusive education rather than recall. Pick one book and revise it repeatedly instead of collecting three.

Both language sections split roughly half comprehension and half language pedagogy. Candidates routinely prepare the comprehension and ignore the pedagogy, which is where the section is actually decided — check that whichever book you buy covers both.

Paper 1 maths and EVS are pitched at the level you would teach, not the level you studied — the difficulty sits in the pedagogy questions attached to each topic. Work from the NCERT textbooks for content and use a guide only for the pedagogy layer and practice.

60 questions · 60 marks · Paper 2 only — choose one track
Paper 2 replaces Paper 1's maths and EVS with a single 60-mark subject block, and you choose: Mathematics & Science if you intend to teach those, Social Studies otherwise. This one choice is worth 40% of the paper, so make it before you buy anything.

Where books stop
CTET is 150 questions in 2 hours 30 minutes with no negative marking, which makes attempt speed and question exposure matter as much as the reading. Candidates who fail on a second attempt usually read enough and practised too little. Work through previous-year papers first — they are free and official — then use timed practice sets to find which section is costing you marks.

Common questions
There is no single book covering Paper 1. Child Development & Pedagogy needs a dedicated guide (Arihant or Shalini Punjabi), the maths and EVS content comes from NCERT classes 1–5, and each language section needs a book that covers language pedagogy and not only comprehension. One book per section, revised repeatedly, beats three books per section read once.
Paper 2 keeps the same CDP and language sections as Paper 1, then replaces maths and EVS with a 60-mark choice between Mathematics & Science and Social Studies. Decide that track first, then work from NCERT classes 6–8 for content and add a guide for the pedagogy questions NCERT does not cover.
NCERT covers the content questions well and is free from the official portal, but it does not cover pedagogy — and pedagogy runs through every section of both papers. NCERT for content plus one pedagogy guide plus previous-year papers is the combination most candidates land on.
