A teaching job at a Kendriya Vidyalaya (KV) attracts lakhs of applicants because it combines central pay-matrix salaries with a national school network. But a lot of what circulates online about "KVS perks" is guesswork: in-hand salary claims, fixed promotion timelines and exam dates nobody has announced.
This guide sticks to what the official documents say. The main source is the KVS and NVS Recruitment Notification 01/2025, published by CBSE on 13 November 2025 for Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) and Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS). It is the most recent teacher recruitment drive for KVS.
Where KVS recruitment stands (checked 9 October 2026)
- The 01/2025 drive is in its final stages. CBSE began announcing Tier-II results in phases with a press release dated 17 August 2026. Interview call letters go to shortlisted candidates through their application login. All updates are listed on the CBSE recruitment page.
- No new teacher drive has been announced. The latest entries on KVS's own notification page are for officer and deputation posts, plus a biodata format for 01/2025 interview candidates. None is a new PRT/TGT/PGT advertisement.
If you see a "KVS 2026 teacher notification" on social media, look for it on cbse.gov.in or kvs.gov.in before acting on it.
What KVS is
The 01/2025 notice describes KVS as an autonomous organisation under the Ministry of Education, Department of School Education and Literacy. KVS has its headquarters in New Delhi, 25 regional offices and five Zonal Institutes of Education and Training (ZIETs). It runs 1,288 Kendriya Vidyalayas, including three abroad. KVs are co-educational schools up to Class 12.
The perk you can verify: central pay levels
These are the pay levels and pay-matrix ranges printed in Notification 01/2025:
| Post | Pay level | Pay-matrix range (₹ per month) | Upper age limit in 01/2025 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary Teacher (PRT) | Level 6 | 35,400 – 1,12,400 | 30 years |
| Trained Graduate Teacher (TGT) | Level 7 | 44,900 – 1,42,400 | 35 years |
| Post Graduate Teacher (PGT) | Level 8 | 47,600 – 1,51,100 | 40 years |
| Vice-Principal (KVS) | Level 10 | 56,100 – 1,77,500 | 35 to 45 years |
| Principal | Level 12 | 78,800 – 2,09,200 | 35 to 50 years |
The first figure in each range is the entry point of that level, not your take-home pay. Allowances such as Dearness Allowance (DA) and House Rent Allowance (HRA) are added on top. They change with government orders and your posting city. Treat any fixed "in-hand ₹70,000" claim with caution, and calculate from the current DA order and the HRA rate for your city instead.
Perks and trade-offs the notice actually spells out
Career ladder through direct recruitment. The same notice shows how teaching experience leads to leadership posts:
- KVS Vice-Principal: PGTs or lecturers with at least 6 years at Level 8 can apply, along with serving vice-principals.
- Principal: eligible candidates include those with 12 years of regular service as PGT/lecturer at Level 8, or KVS candidates with 3 years as vice-principal at Level 10.
KVS also runs Limited Departmental Examinations for serving staff. Its notification page carried answer-key notices for the KVS LDE/LDCE 2025-26 on 1 September 2026.
All-India posting. The notice says selected candidates "may be posted anywhere in India on initial posting." It also says requests to change station or region will not be entertained. For some people that is a perk. For others, such as those with family duties, it is the main drawback.
Probation. Selected candidates start on two years' probation, which the competent authority can extend. During probation, services can be terminated without assigning a reason.
Language. Most teaching posts require proficiency to teach in both Hindi and English.
For how probation and promotions work across central jobs in general, see our guide to government job progression and MACPS.
Eligibility snapshot from Notification 01/2025
| Requirement | PRT | TGT | PGT |
|---|---|---|---|
| Academic | 10+2 with at least 50%, plus a 2-year D.El.Ed or a 4-year B.El.Ed (a 2-year RCI D.Ed. Special Education is also accepted) | Bachelor's with at least 50% in the subject and in aggregate, plus B.Ed. with 50% (or a 4-year integrated degree) | Master's with at least 50% in the subject, plus B.Ed. with 50% (or an integrated course) |
| Teacher eligibility test | CTET Paper-I | CTET Paper-II | Not listed in the PGT qualifications |
| Upper age | 30 | 35 | 40 |
Subject-specific conditions apply. For example, TGT (English) requires English as an elective subject for a minimum period of study. Read the rows for your exact subject in the notice. Age relaxations for reserved categories follow government rules. If CTET is still pending for you, our CTET preparation guide explains the papers.
How selection worked in the 01/2025 drive
- Tier-1 (qualifying, OMR): 100 questions for 300 marks in 2 hours, covering reasoning, numeric ability, computer literacy, general knowledge, English and one other Indian language. Each question carries 3 marks and 1 mark is deducted per wrong answer. Candidates were shortlisted for Tier-2 at a ratio of 1:10 to vacancies.
- Tier-2 (subject knowledge): 2½ hours, 100 marks, with 60 objective questions (1 mark each, 0.25 negative) and 10 descriptive questions worth 40 marks in total.
- Interview (100 marks): candidates shortlisted from Tier-2 at a ratio of 1:3.
- Final merit for PRT, TGT and PGT: Tier-2 marks carry 85% weight and interview marks 15%.
Worked example: how much the interview matters (illustrative)
Two hypothetical PGT candidates:
| Candidate | Tier-2 (out of 100) | Interview (out of 100) | 85% of Tier-2 | 15% of interview | Final score |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | 74 | 55 | 62.90 | 8.25 | 71.15 |
| B | 70 | 80 | 59.50 | 12.00 | 71.50 |
Candidate B ranks above A even with 4 fewer Tier-2 marks. Each interview mark is worth 0.15 of a final mark, so a 25-mark interview gap (3.75 final marks) outweighs a 4-mark Tier-2 gap (3.40 final marks). Prepare for the interview alongside your subject. Our teaching interview questions guide can help.
Vacancies and fees in the original notice
The 13 November 2025 notice listed 3,365 PRT posts (including Special Educator and PRT Music), 2,794 TGT posts (including Special Educator) and 1,465 PGT posts in KVS. CBSE later issued corrigenda and public notices, so check the recruitment page for revised figures rather than relying on any single number.
The fee was ₹1,500 (examination) plus ₹500 (processing) for PRT, TGT and PGT. SC, ST, PwBD and ex-servicemen candidates were exempt from the examination fee but still paid the ₹500 processing fee.
