Tamil Nadu Government Jobs 2026: TNPSC Notifications and How to Choose

A Tamil Nadu state government job is still one of the most sought-after career routes in the state, and 2026 has been a busy year for recruitment. The Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) issued all six of its planned major notifications for the year, including Group IV with 6,574 posts, and the Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board (TNUSRB) has published its plan for police recruitment into 2027.

Whether a TN government job is a good choice for you depends less on general claims about security and more on two practical questions: which recruitment matches your qualification, and whether you can clear the Tamil eligibility requirement. This guide answers both from TNPSC's own notifications.

Checked against tnpsc.gov.in and tnusrb.tn.gov.in on 9 October 2026.

What TNPSC planned for 2026, and what happened

TNPSC's Annual Planner 2026 (published 3 December 2025, and described by TNPSC as tentative) listed six major examinations:

Group IV: the largest recruitment of the year

Notification No. 11/2026, dated 6 October 2026, covers 6,574 vacancies across 46 posts, including 291 Village Administrative Officer posts and 2,610 Junior Assistant posts.

ItemOfficial position
Online applications6 October to 5 November 2026 (until 11:59 pm)
Correction window9 to 11 November 2026
Examination10 January 2027, 9:30 am to 12:30 pm
Age (Others)18 to 30 on 1 July 2026 for most posts (21 for VAO, Forest Watcher and Forest Guard), with higher limits for reserved communities

The exam is a single three-hour OMR paper of 200 questions and 300 marks:

  • Part A, Tamil Eligibility-cum-Scoring Test: 100 questions, 150 marks, SSLC standard.
  • Parts B and C, General Studies and Aptitude and Mental Ability: 100 questions, 150 marks.

The rule that matters most: Parts B and C are evaluated only if you score at least 40% (60 marks) in Part A.

Worked example: the Tamil gate

Illustrative only. Two candidates sit Group IV:

CandidatePart A (out of 150)Parts B and C (out of 150)Outcome
A55Would have scored 120Parts B and C are not evaluated, because 55 is below 60
B96100Total 196 out of 300, all three parts counted

Candidate A's strong general studies never count. Part A also adds to your total once you clear it, so Tamil is both a gate and a scoring section.

Groups I and II/IIA in brief

Group II and IIA (Notification 07/2026, 11 August 2026): 41 Group II and 780 Group IIA posts in the notification, with later additions by addendum. A common preliminary exam on 1 November 2026 has 200 questions for 300 marks: General Studies (75), Aptitude and Mental Ability (25) and a language paper in General Tamil or General English (100). Most posts have an age band of 18 to 32 for Others on 1 July 2026. The Main examination includes a Tamil Eligibility Test.

Group I (Notification 05/2026, 23 June 2026): 26 posts in the notification, including 12 Deputy Collector posts, with further posts added by Addendum 5B in August 2026 (including Assistant Director of Rural Development and District Employment Officer). The minimum age is 21. Selection is by a preliminary exam, a Main examination whose first paper is a qualifying Tamil Eligibility Test, and an interview; ranking is based on Main Papers II–IV and the interview. The notification scheduled the preliminary exam for 6 September 2026; check TNPSC's exam dashboard for the actual date, answer key and results.

The Tamil requirement

TNPSC's 2026 notifications say candidates "should possess adequate knowledge in Tamil on the date of this Notification." The Group IV notification explains how this can be shown, for example by passing SSLC, HSC or a degree with Tamil as a language, by studying in the Tamil medium, or by passing the Second Class Language Test in Tamil. Check the exact list in your notification before you apply.

Police and other routes

TNUSRB recruits for uniformed services. Its Common Recruitment 2025 (Notification 02/2025) covered Grade-II Police Constables, Jail Warders and Firemen. Its Annual Planner 2026–27 lists, as tentative notification months, Grade-II Police Constables (Women) and Sub-Inspectors of Police (Women) in December 2026, and Common Recruitment in February 2027. School teaching posts are recruited through the Teachers Recruitment Board.
