UPSC EPFO 2026: APFC Recruitment Test Rules, Dates and Preparation

"UPSC EPFO exam" is the common name for the Union Public Service Commission's recruitment to officer posts in the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO), under the Ministry of Labour and Employment. In 2026 there is one live recruitment: Special Advertisement No. 52/2026 for 80 Assistant Provident Fund Commissioner (APFC) posts, with a pen-and-paper Recruitment Test (RT) scheduled for 20 December 2026.

This guide explains that advertisement, the RT and interview scheme, how the marks combine, and the previous cycle's timeline. It also corrects several claims that circulate about this recruitment, such as a "prelims and mains" structure and an experience requirement for APFC, neither of which appears in the current advertisement.

Checked against UPSC advertisements and notices on upsc.gov.in on 9 October 2026.

Is there an Enforcement Officer / Accounts Officer (EO/AO) recruitment in 2026? When we checked UPSC's 2026 advertisements, none included EO/AO posts. The most recent EO/AO recruitment was part of Special Advertisement No. 52/2025 (see below).

How selection works: one test, then an interview

The advertisement describes a single Recruitment Test followed by an interview. There is no separate prelims and mains.

The Recruitment Test:

  • two hours, objective, multiple choice;
  • all questions carry equal marks;
  • available in English and Hindi;
  • a deduction of one-third of the marks for each wrong answer.

The advertisement does not state the number of questions, so treat any figure quoted elsewhere as unofficial until UPSC's admit card or instructions confirm it.

Syllabus headings in the 2026 advertisement:

  1. General English (understanding of English and workmanlike use of words)
  2. Indian Culture, Heritage and Freedom Movements
  3. Developmental Issues and Present Trends in Indian Economy
  4. Governance and Constitution of India
  5. General Science and Basic Knowledge of Computer Applications
  6. Elementary Mathematics, Statistics and General Mental Ability
  7. Industrial Relations, Labour Codes and Social Security in India
  8. Principles of Accountancy, Auditing and Insurance
  9. Current Events of National and International Importance

Note item 7. The 2025 advertisement said "Labour Laws"; the 2026 advertisement says "Labour Codes". If your study material is organised around the older individual Acts, check how it maps to the Codes.

How the marks combine

The advertisement allots 300 marks to the RT and 100 to the interview, with weightage in the ratio 75:25. Because 300:100 is already 75:25, the weighting is the same as adding the two raw scores out of 400.

Worked example (illustrative): a candidate scores 180 out of 300 in the RT and 60 out of 100 in the interview.

  • Weighted: (180 ÷ 300 × 75) + (60 ÷ 100 × 25) = 45 + 15 = 60 out of 100
  • Raw total: 180 + 60 = 240 out of 400 = 60%

Both methods give the same result. The interview also has a minimum suitability standard: 50 for General and EWS candidates, 45 for OBC and 40 for SC, ST and PwBD candidates, out of 100. A strong RT score cannot carry a candidate who falls below that standard.

What the one-third penalty means for guessing

The advertisement does not say how many options each question has. If a question has four options, a blind guess has an expected value of zero: a 1-in-4 chance of gaining one mark against a 3-in-4 chance of losing a third. Ruling out even one option makes an attempt worth it on average. Track your mock-test accuracy on "eliminated one option" questions to see whether that holds for you.

What the previous cycle tells you

Special Advertisement No. 52/2025 combined two posts: 156 EO/AO posts (Level 8, Group 'B', upper age 30 for UR/EWS) and 74 APFC posts (Level 10). The timeline shows how long the process takes:

StepDate
Advertisement published29 July 2025
Applications closed18 August 2025
Combined Recruitment Test30 November 2025
Test results (interview shortlists)December 2025
EO/AO scrutiny notice for interviewJuly 2026 (458 candidates)
APFC final scrutiny notice for interviewSeptember 2026 (256 candidates)

When we checked, no final result for either post had been published, roughly ten months after the test. Plan your time on that basis rather than expecting a quick finish.

A preparation outline for the December test

With the test about ten weeks away when this was checked, focus on the syllabus headings that most other exams do not cover:

Weeks 1–3: Labour Codes and social security; accountancy, auditing and insurance basics
Weeks 4–6: Constitution and governance; economy; culture, heritage and freedom movement
Weeks 7–8: General English, mathematics, statistics and mental ability under time
Weeks 9–10: Full two-hour tests with the one-third penalty; error review
Throughout: dated current-events notes; check upsc.gov.in for the admit card

This outline is an editorial suggestion. Adjust it to your strengths and the time you have.
