SSC CHSL 2026: Read the Pattern and Plan Section Practice

The SSC CHSL 2026 scheme has two tiers. Tier-II includes objective components and a qualifying skill or typing test; it is not the old essay-and-letter descriptive paper. Understanding that distinction helps you practise the work the current examination actually requires.

This guide explains the standard scheme, provides fictional score examples and shows how to build a section-specific practice plan. It does not estimate vacancies, take-home salaries or a score that guarantees selection.

Editorially revised on 8 October 2026. Scheme reference: the official notice dated 7 September 2026.

Use the current official notice

The SSC CHSL 2026 notice, pages 16–21, sets out the examination. Read it with later notices on the SSC website. Standard timings below exclude conditional accommodations.

Tier-I: English, Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude and General Awareness each have 25 questions, 50 marks and 15 minutes. Total: 100 questions, 200 marks, 60 minutes. Wrong answers cost 0.50 marks.

Read Tier-II as four sections

The Session-I objective components are:

ComponentQuestions / marksTime
Maths30 / 9030 min
Reasoning30 / 9030 min
English40 / 12040 min
Awareness20 / 6020 min
Computer15 / 4515 min

Session-I lasts 135 minutes. Objective wrong answers cost one mark. Computer knowledge is qualifying. Section-IV is the qualifying skill/typing test in Session-II; check all required section qualifications.

DEO standards are 15,000 key depressions/hour for the specified departments and 8,000 otherwise, tested over 15 minutes. LDC/JSA typing is English 35 words/minute or Hindi 30, over ten minutes. Read post-specific conditions and accommodations in full.

Match eligibility and the input task to the post

The general educational starting point is 12th or equivalent, but specified DEO posts require Science with Mathematics. Do not assume that all CHSL posts have identical qualifications or that applying for one post automatically establishes eligibility for another.

Check the actual notified post, qualification cutoff, age conditions and applicable category rules before selecting preferences. Use your records to establish completion status. This article cannot determine individual eligibility from a generic “12th-pass” label.

Also identify whether the relevant input task is DEO skill work or LDC/JSA typing. Do not substitute one speed measure for the other. A personal typing-app result is not an official assessment, and an exemption must follow the applicable conditions.

Understand what sectional timing changes

Set practice blocks using the current timers. Do not give yourself unrestricted movement among subjects and call it an exact examination simulation. A leftover minute in one timed component is not a general reserve for the next.

Early learning can be untimed when the goal is to understand a method. Later, timed work should help you identify slow recall, long calculations or time spent on questions you could not solve. Keep concept learning and simulation distinct so you know what the result measures.

Before using a platform's full mock, compare its count, sequence, marking and timers with the official scheme. A practice set with an older structure can still contain useful questions, but record that limitation rather than using its total as a directly comparable benchmark.

Check raw-score arithmetic

The following calculations are fictional practice examples, not real candidate results or selection cutoffs.

In a Tier-I section, 20 correct, three wrong and two blank give 40 positive marks minus 1.5: a raw 38.5 out of 50. The attempt counts total 25 questions.

In the Tier-II English component, 34 correct, four wrong and two blank give 102 minus four: 98 out of 120. Do not apply the Tier-I penalty to that component, and do not confuse CHSL's question count with CGL's English component.

Keep qualifying requirements separate from the raw total. Normalisation, competitive shortlisting and official merit provisions require the actual notice and results. A minimum qualifying condition does not establish a universal score sufficient for appointment.

Build an evidence-based practice plan

Start with a diagnostic across the required areas. Record what you can solve independently, what you solve only after the timer and what remains unclear even with more time. Add the computer and relevant input task to the checklist.

Choose a small number of gaps for the next week. For a concept gap, learn the method and check examples. For a reading error, practise identifying the exact question and conditions. For slow work, compare methods on similar questions after the underlying concept is clear.

Use an adaptable worksheet:

Target post and input task:
Component requiring attention:
Evidence from the diagnostic:
Topic or method to revisit:
Independent practice and timer:
Error review and reattempt:
What will change next week:

The worksheet is an editorial planning tool. It does not specify a compulsory daily question count, universal study duration or guaranteed preparation timeline.

Practise English and awareness with checked context

For English, distinguish vocabulary, grammar and comprehension mistakes. Write the reason the answer is correct rather than saving only a letter option. Reattempt with a different sentence or passage so you can see whether you learned the rule.

For awareness, keep source-labelled notes and revisit them. Do not assume a fixed recent-month window covers the whole official syllabus. Separate a dated event from a general fact and update notes when a correction is needed.

Use the current-affairs hub and monthly revision material as preparation resources, while checking relevance to the syllabus. A news digest is not a substitute for all static awareness topics.

Keep computer and skill preparation visible

Qualifying components can still affect whether you progress. Practise relevant computer topics and the actual input task instead of scheduling them only after the written examination.

For input practice, record errors as well as speed, the duration, language and task used. A short burst of fast typing does not establish performance over the prescribed task. Do not convert words per minute to key depressions per hour with an assumed formula and present it as official qualification.

Read the provided interface, evaluation and call-letter instructions when available. If you have a question about an accommodation or exemption, confirm it through the relevant official provisions rather than relying on a general writing guide.

Select resources that fit this scheme

The SSC CHSL mock hub and study-resource hub provide preparation starting points. Check the stated coverage and sample access. The previous-year paper collection can support topic practice when the actual exam and year are identified.

Older papers may reflect a previous pattern. Use them deliberately for concepts or questions, and keep your current timer and component sheet separate. Do not practise essays as though they were the Tier-II task described in this notice.

Limit resource switching. Review a test, identify a gap and use a suitable explanation or practice set. Buying more overlapping material does not by itself show that a weak topic has improved.

Check official dates and documents separately

The September notice listed an application window ending 7 October 2026 and said examination dates would be notified later. These are the source notice's statements, not a live confirmation that a window remains open or that no later schedule exists.

Check the SSC website for subsequent changes, admission instructions and results. Save the date of your latest review. Do not reuse tentative dates from another year, and do not treat a preparation timetable as an official exam schedule.

Keep application confirmations and required records apart from practice results. A good mock score does not establish eligibility, submission or selection.

Frequently asked questions

Is CHSL Tier-II an essay paper in this notice?

No. The current notice describes objective components and a qualifying skill/typing section.

Are CGL and CHSL component counts identical?

No. Compare each examination's own scheme; shared subject names do not establish identical questions, marks or input tasks.

Can I ignore typing because it is qualifying?

Check the requirement for your post. Qualifying does not mean optional unless a valid exemption applies.
