The Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), headquartered at Trombay in Mumbai, is a nuclear research centre of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE). "BARC recruitment" is not one exam. Officers, scientific assistants, technicians and administrative staff each come in through different routes. This guide explains those routes using BARC's own careers pages, walks through the OCES/DGFS-2026 programme (the main entry route for young scientists and engineers) from its official brochure, and shows you how to track the next openings.
How BARC recruits: the main routes
According to BARC's careers page, recruitment works like this:
| Route | Who it is for | How selection works |
|---|---|---|
| OCES / DGFS (BARC Training Schools) | Engineering graduates and science postgraduates | Screening by online exam or GATE score, then selection interview; one-year training (OCES) or M.Tech fellowship (DGFS) before appointment as Scientific Officer |
| Dr. K.S. Krishnan Research Associateship (KSKRA) | Ph.D. holders in science or engineering (or engineers with a master's degree and two years' R&D experience), as described on BARC's officers page | Research associateship with prospects of regular absorption in DAE units |
| Open advertisements for Technical Officer (C) or higher | Specialised areas such as medical officers, architects, library, IT and fire professionals | Advertised in newspapers and on BARC's website when vacancies arise |
| Stipendiary Training Scheme, Category I | Scientific Assistants | One-year stipendiary training |
| Stipendiary Training Scheme, Category II | Technicians | Two-year stipendiary training |
| Administrative staff | Administrative, accounts, purchase and stores officials | Direct recruitment by written exam and/or interview |
| Auxiliary staff | Security, drivers, attendants | Open advertisements in Employment News and newspapers |
So the first question is not "when is the BARC exam?" but "which route matches my qualification?"

Details below are from the OCES/DGFS-2026 information brochure and the OCES/DGFS application portal.
What the two programmes are
- OCES (Orientation Course for Engineering Graduates and Science Postgraduates): a one-year training programme at BARC Training Schools. Trainee Scientific Officers (TSOs) who score at least 35% in each subject and 50% aggregate pass the course and are posted as Scientific Officer 'C' in a DAE unit or the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board. BARC's officers page says the course starts on 1 August each year and is recognised for a Post-Graduate Diploma, and as course work for M.Tech/M.Phil/Ph.D., of the Homi Bhabha National Institute.
- DGFS (DAE Graduate Fellowship Scheme): for engineering graduates selected through the same interviews who also secure M.Tech admission independently at a DGFS institute (the portal names IIT Bombay and IIT Madras). Fellows are paid a stipend and tuition fee for the M.Tech while retaining their DAE employment, and are posted as Scientific Officer 'C' afterwards.
Training schools listed by BARC include Mumbai, IGCAR Kalpakkam, RRCAT Indore and NFC Hyderabad, with AMD Hyderabad for exploration-related work.
Eligibility highlights (2026 brochure)
- Engineering: B.E./B.Tech/B.Sc.(Engg.)/5-year integrated M.Tech with at least 60% aggregate (or 6.0 CGPA on a 10-point scale) in an eligible discipline.
- Sciences: M.Sc. in eligible subjects (for example Physics, Chemistry, Biosciences) with at least 60% aggregate, plus the brochure's additional conditions on earlier degrees. Each discipline has its own table of eligible degrees and GATE papers.
- Maximum age as on 1 August 2026: General 26 years; OBC (non-creamy layer) 29; SC/ST 31; certain other categories 31; persons with disabilities get 10 years' relaxation. Minimum age is 18.
- Nationality: Indian citizens only. Government and PSU employees need a No Objection Certificate at the interview.
- Fee: ₹500 for male General and OBC applicants; women, transgender, SC/ST and certain other categories are exempted.
Selection process
Selection has two stages for each discipline:
- Screening through either an online computer-based test, or a valid GATE score (GATE 2024, 2025 or 2026 in the matching paper; the highest is used). Candidates may opt for both channels.
- Selection interview in Mumbai (Hyderabad for Geology and Geophysics), with final selection subject to medical fitness.
OCES/DGFS-2026 timeline (from the brochure, Table 4)
| Event | Date |
|---|---|
| Advertisement published | 22 December 2025 |
| Last date for online registration | 21 January 2026 |
| Online examination | 14 and 15 March 2026 |
| Shortlist for interviews | Second week of April 2026 |
| Selection interviews | 12 May to 12 June 2026 |
| Final selection list | Last week of June 2026 |
The portal also posted a notice that the 2026 application portal would go live at 20:00 hrs on 2 January 2026. The 2026 cycle is complete; for the next cycle, check the portal and BARC's vacancies page for the new advertisement and dates rather than assuming the same calendar.
Stipend and pay
| Stage | Amount stated by BARC |
|---|---|
| OCES training (1 year) | Stipend of ₹74,000 per month plus a one-time book allowance of ₹30,000 |
| DGFS (2 years) | Stipend of ₹74,000 per month, M.Tech tuition fee reimbursed, plus a contingency grant of ₹60,000 per year |
| On appointment as Scientific Officer 'C' | Level 10 of the 7th CPC pay matrix (₹56,100), with two or three increments for OCES TSOs based on training performance |
BARC's officers page says that monthly emoluments at joining, with three increments and including DA, HRA and transport allowance at Mumbai rates, are "approximately ₹1,35,000". Allowances change over time and by posting, so treat this as an indicative figure from BARC rather than a guarantee.
The brochure also requires selected OCES candidates to sign an agreement and a personal indemnity bond to serve DAE for at least three years after training; the bond amount covers the stipend and book allowance actually paid. Read that section before accepting an offer.
Worked example: which route fits you?
These are illustrative profiles, not real candidates.
| Profile | Likely route | What to check first |
|---|---|---|
| Final-year B.Tech (Mechanical), 72% aggregate, age 22 | OCES (Engineering) via online test or GATE | That your discipline appears in Table 1a and your GATE paper matches it |
| M.Sc. Chemistry, 65%, age 24 | OCES (Chemistry) | The additional B.Sc.-level conditions for chemistry in the brochure |
| B.Tech, 58% aggregate | Not eligible for OCES on marks | Other DAE or PSU routes; BARC open advertisements in your field |
| Ph.D. in Physics, age 30 | KSKRA | The age limit (32 as on 1 January of the application year, with category relaxations) and the 60% requirement at bachelor's and master's level |
| Diploma, ITI or B.Sc. holder | Stipendiary Training Scheme (Category I for scientific assistants or Category II for technicians), when advertised | The qualifications, trades and age limits in that specific advertisement |
How to track BARC openings
- Check the BARC vacancies page for current advertisements. On 9 October 2026, the latest item listed there (RE-2/2026) was for re-engagement of retired DAE employees as consultants, not a fresh recruitment.
- For OCES/DGFS, watch the application portal and Employment News.
- Ignore social-media posts promising "500 vacancies" or quoting cut-offs without an official source. Vacancy numbers and cut-offs appear only in BARC's own notices.
Preparation pointers
- Know your discipline syllabus. The online test is discipline-specific, so revise core undergraduate (engineering) or postgraduate (science) subjects.
- Treat GATE as a parallel path. A good GATE score can screen you in without the online test; the brochure allows you to opt for both channels.
- Prepare for a technical interview. Expect questions on fundamentals of your subject and on your projects.
- Keep documents ready: marksheets, degree or provisional certificate, category certificates and an NOC if you are employed.
BARC offers a structured entry into nuclear science and engineering, but every route has its own eligibility rules and timeline. Start from the official careers pages, pick the route that matches your qualification, and plan around the dates in the current advertisement.
