If you are looking for a West Bengal government job, the first step is knowing which body recruits for the post you want. State civil services and many office posts go through the Public Service Commission, West Bengal (WBPSC); school teaching posts and police posts have their own recruitment boards. This guide explains who recruits for what, summarises the main WBPSC examinations using the commission's own advertisements, and gives you a checklist for reading any West Bengal notice.
Facts below were checked on the official websites on 9 October 2026. Recruitment rules change between cycles, so always read the advertisement for the exam you are applying to.

WBCS (Executive) etc. Examination: how it works
The scheme and syllabus for WBCS 2024 sets out three stages.
Preliminary: one General Studies paper, objective type, 200 multiple-choice questions for 200 marks in 2½ hours. It covers English composition, general science, current events, history of India, geography of India with special reference to West Bengal, Indian polity and economy, the Indian National Movement and general mental ability (25 marks each). It is a screening test; its marks do not count in the final merit.
Main: six compulsory papers of 200 marks each, three hours each:
| Paper | Subject | Type |
|---|---|---|
| I | Bengali/Hindi/Urdu/Nepali/Santali (letter or report, précis, composition, translation) | Conventional |
| II | English (letter or report, précis, composition, translation) | Conventional |
| III | General Studies I – Indian history with emphasis on the National Movement; geography of India with reference to West Bengal | MCQ |
| IV | General Studies II – science and technology, environment, general knowledge and current affairs | MCQ |
| V | The Constitution of India and Indian Economy, including the role and functions of the RBI | MCQ |
| VI | Arithmetic and Test of Reasoning | MCQ |
Candidates for Group A and/or Group B services also take one optional subject (two papers of 200 marks each) from a list of 38 subjects. The scheme states that there is negative marking for wrong answers in MCQ papers.
Personality Test: 200 marks for Group A and B, 150 for Group C and 100 for Group D. Total marks for final merit are therefore 1,800 (Groups A and B), 1,350 (Group C) and 1,300 (Group D).

Rules that apply across WBPSC advertisements
- Bengali language: the Clerkship and Miscellaneous Services advertisements both require the ability to read, write and speak Bengali (not required for candidates whose mother tongue is Nepali), citing a Finance Department notification of 2 March 2016. Candidates whose mother tongue is neither Bengali nor Nepali are tested on it.
- Reservation: reservation benefits are available only to SC, ST, OBC (non-creamy layer) and EWS candidates of West Bengal. Candidates from these categories in other states are treated as general/unreserved.
- Age proof: only the age recorded in the Madhyamik or equivalent certificate is accepted.
Worked example: checking your age eligibility
Take the Clerkship 2024 rule: 18 to 45 years on 1 January 2024, with the window "born not earlier than 2 January 1979".
- General candidate born 15 March 1978: born before 2 January 1979, so over the upper limit. Not eligible.
- OBC (non-creamy layer) candidate of West Bengal born 15 March 1978: the upper limit rises by 3 years, so the earliest permitted birth date moves back to 2 January 1976. Eligible on age.
- SC candidate of West Bengal born 10 June 1975: a 5-year relaxation moves the earliest date to 2 January 1974. Eligible on age.
- OBC candidate from Bihar born 15 March 1978: treated as a general candidate, so the relaxation does not apply. Not eligible.
These are illustrative cases. Work out your own dates from the advertisement for your exam, because the reference date and limits differ between exams.
A checklist before you apply
- Confirm which body recruits for your target post (WBPSC, WBSSC, WBPRB or a central agency).
- Download the detailed advertisement, not just a news summary or the indicative notice.
- Check qualification, age on the reference date, and any typing or language requirement.
- Keep your Madhyamik certificate (for date of birth) and West Bengal category certificates ready.
- Note every stage: preliminary, main or Part-II, personality or skill test.
- Track announcements on the commission's website; answer keys, admit cards and corrigenda are posted there.
West Bengal's state recruitment is spread across several bodies and long-running exam cycles. Identify the right recruiter, read the full advertisement, and plan around the stages it describes.
