Resume Format in India: Choose a Structure for Your Evidence

Choosing a resume format means deciding which evidence a recruiter should see first. It does not mean finding a design that guarantees an interview. For an application in India, start with the employer’s instructions, the role’s requirements and the experience you can honestly demonstrate.

This guide helps you choose a section order and build a reusable document. For the separate question of whether an employer wants a resume or an academic CV, use the resume versus CV decision guide. For adapting an existing academic document, use the CV-to-resume conversion guide. For file parsing and upload checks, use the ATS resume guide.

Editorially revised on 8 October 2026. Examples below are fictional teaching samples, not verified candidate outcomes.

The MIT resume guidance is a useful general reference for selecting relevant evidence and clear presentation. Its advice comes from a university careers context; employer instructions still govern your application.

Start with the submission instructions

Before changing a template, record the requested file type, size limit, document name, application fields and any additional portfolio requirements. A prescribed form takes precedence over a general resume layout. If the employer requests DOCX, submit DOCX; if it requests PDF, use a readable PDF. Neither file type is universally correct for every recruitment system.

Create a small submission note: “Role: junior accounts assistant; evidence requested: spreadsheet work and reconciliation; attachment: PDF; portfolio: optional.” This prevents spending an evening redesigning a document while missing an actual requirement. Keep the job description alongside your working copy so that revisions respond to the same target.

Avoid putting personal identifiers, a full residential address or family information into a general resume merely because an old template includes those fields. Include relevant contact details and provide additional information through the employer’s verified process when it is genuinely requested.

Choose a structure that explains your evidence

StructureNotes
Reverse chronologicalWhat it puts first: Recent roles, then earlier roles; Useful situation: Your recent work is relevant to the vacancy; Check before using it: Each role has clear dates and responsibilities
Education and projects firstWhat it puts first: Relevant education and practical work; Useful situation: You have limited employment experience; Check before using it: Projects identify your own contribution
Summary of relevant skills, then dated historyWhat it puts first: Transferable evidence followed by context; Useful situation: You are changing fields or combining varied experience; Check before using it: Dates and employers remain easy to find

These are editorial options, not rules imposed across the Indian job market. An experienced applicant may still place a recent relevant qualification near the top. A fresher with a substantial internship may put that internship before education. The question is whether the order makes your suitability easier to understand.

A skills-only document can leave the reader uncertain about when and where you used those skills. If you choose a skills-led opening, retain a clear dated history further down. Changing the layout should clarify a career transition, not conceal it.

A practical section order for a fresher

Use the following as a starting arrangement, then adjust it to the vacancy:

  1. Name, phone, professional email and relevant portfolio link.
  2. Optional short profile explaining the target work and strongest relevant evidence.
  3. Education with qualification, institution and accurate completion status.
  4. Projects or internships, ordered by relevance.
  5. Technical or occupational skills you can demonstrate.
  6. Relevant certifications, activities or language capabilities.

An optional profile should add information. “Hardworking and dedicated individual seeking a challenging opportunity” gives the reader little evidence. A fictional alternative is: “Commerce graduate with a college reconciliation project and an accounts internship; comfortable checking spreadsheet records and documenting discrepancies.” Use that wording only if those experiences are yours.

For each project, include the context, your responsibility, the work you performed and a verifiable output. A course title alone does not establish competence. If a project was shared, distinguish your part from the team’s result.

A practical section order for experienced applicants

Start with contact details and, if useful, a brief role-specific profile. Follow with relevant experience in reverse date order, then education and supporting qualifications. A short skills section can help readers find tools, but the experience section should show where those tools were used.

Keep the same date style throughout. Distinguish permanent employment, contract work, consulting and internships accurately. If you performed concurrent work, label the arrangement instead of making overlapping dates look like an error.

An earlier role can receive fewer bullets when it is less relevant. That does not justify changing its title or deleting information a required application form asks you to provide. Your resume is a selective summary; the employer’s complete-history fields may require additional detail.

Build bullets from facts before adding numbers

Use a simple drafting worksheet:

PromptFictional illustration
What needed doing?Several monthly invoice records required review
What did you personally do?Compared entries with supporting documents
What did you produce?A reconciliation sheet and an exception list
What can you verify?Your task, the records used and the supervisor’s review

A defensible sample bullet is: “Compared invoice entries with supporting documents and prepared an exception list for supervisor review.” A measured number can make a bullet clearer, but only when you can explain its origin. Do not manufacture a percentage improvement to make a routine responsibility sound more impressive.

For a technical project, specify the implemented feature, your testing method and the limitations. “Built a sample expense tracker with category filters and checked calculations against a small test dataset” is more informative than claiming production scale that the project never reached.

Keep layout decisions simple

Use clear section headings, consistent spacing and a readable type size. Prioritise important information over decorative icons, photographs and large banners. Review the exported document at normal viewing size; a compact document is not useful if reading it requires zooming in on every line.

Page length should follow relevant evidence and any stated limit. Do not add unrelated material simply to fill a second page. Equally, do not shrink the font excessively to force substantial relevant experience onto one page. Check whether a page break separates a role heading from its bullets.

For links, use a portfolio or profile that opens without requiring private permissions. Test the actual exported file, not just the editor version. A project link with no explanation leaves the reader to guess what they should inspect.

Make a master copy and a role-specific copy

Keep a private master document containing accurate experience, dates, projects and qualifications. For each application, select the most relevant evidence and reorder it thoughtfully. Retain the underlying facts.

Use a neutral filename such as Name_Accounts_Assistant_Resume.pdf, subject to the employer’s instructions. Save the exact submitted version with the vacancy reference. This helps you prepare for an interview using the same document the recruiter received.

Final review and common questions

Should every resume include an objective? No. Include a short profile only when it helps explain relevant evidence or direction. Your section order and bullets may already do that work.

Can I use a colourful template? You can, but check readability, upload requirements and whether it distracts from the evidence. A design choice does not prove compatibility with every system.

What should I check before sending? Confirm contact details, dates, qualification status, spelling, link access and the employer’s requested attachment format. Read each bullet aloud and ask whether you could explain it in an interview.
