Resume examples are useful when you can see the evidence behind the wording. Copying an impressive sentence without its supporting work creates a claim you may not be able to explain. This guide provides six original fictional before-and-after examples, their evidence notes and a worksheet for drafting your own statements. It does not present the examples as real candidate records or promise interview calls.
The focus is the wording of individual experience statements. For overall candidate structure, see the fresher and experienced CV examples. For a final file review, use the CV format checks. Those guides address document structure and exported files; this article examines what a bullet actually says.
A narrow source principle
Harvard's resume guidance supports factual, specific descriptions relevant to the intended role. This is general university writing guidance, not an Indian hiring rule or an ATS scoring formula. The examples below are original editorial exercises, not Harvard samples.
Begin with work you actually did. Record the task, your contribution, the setting and what you can support. Then select the detail relevant to the vacancy. A factual sentence can still be irrelevant, and a relevant-sounding sentence can still be false. Both checks matter before you add it to a document.
Keep preparing

Weak fictional statement: “Managed a major event and increased efficiency by fifty percent.”
Evidence note: The fictional student maintained a spreadsheet showing pending tasks, their responsible team members and the planned completion dates. Other students organised bookings and programme activities. No efficiency measurement was made.
Revised example: “Maintained the college event task tracker, recording pending items and responsible team members for the organising group.”
The revision identifies the student's actual contribution and avoids assigning the whole event to one person. The unsupported percentage disappears because the evidence does not contain a comparable measurement. In a follow-up, the student should be able to explain how the tracker was updated and what information it contained.
If the target vacancy involves record-keeping or coordination, the example may be relevant. If it requires professional event-budget responsibility, this statement does not establish that requirement. Keep the distinction between a useful project example and formal workplace responsibility.
Example two: a spreadsheet cleaning exercise
Weak fictional statement: “Expert data analyst delivering business transformation.”
Evidence note: The fictional learner cleaned an invented spreadsheet containing duplicate item codes and missing quantities. The work was a personal practice exercise, with no client or business outcome. The learner documented the checks and the remaining uncertain entries.
Revised example: “Completed a labelled spreadsheet practice exercise to identify duplicate item codes and missing quantities, documenting checks and unresolved entries.”
The statement shows what the exercise involved without turning it into employment or expert status. The label belongs near the example so that a reader need not search elsewhere to discover the setting. A practice exercise can support discussion of a method, but it does not prove that the learner can manage every data-analysis task.
For a real project, describe the actual dataset only within applicable sharing permissions. Do not publish workplace files merely to make a resume claim easier to verify. You can explain an authorised contribution without exposing private source material.
Example three: a customer follow-up record
Weak fictional statement: “Improved customer satisfaction across the company.”
Evidence note: The fictional employee recorded follow-up dates and unresolved enquiries. A designated colleague handled the final response. No customer satisfaction survey or company-wide comparison was available.
Revised example: “Recorded customer enquiry follow-up dates and unresolved items, passing the current list to the designated response contact.”
The revised wording describes a specific process and preserves the approval boundary. It does not imply that the employee independently resolved every enquiry or changed a company-wide measure. If a verified result later becomes available and is appropriate to share, the statement can be reviewed with that evidence.
Prepare to explain what happened when an item remained unresolved. A concrete process account is more informative than replacing one broad claim with another. It also helps identify whether the example fits the target role's actual duties.
Example four: a team website component
Weak fictional statement: “Independently built a complete production website.”
Evidence note: The fictional candidate implemented a contact-form component in a four-person practice website. Another member designed the pages; the project was not a production service. The candidate tested required-field handling and submitted test messages in the practice environment.
Revised example: “Implemented and checked the contact-form component in a team practice website, testing required-field handling and sample submissions.”
The revision preserves the candidate's technical contribution while identifying both the team setting and the practice environment. It does not establish payment integration, production operations or a security review. Those capabilities need their own evidence if relevant to the vacancy.
If the candidate used a tutorial, template or existing library, they should be able to explain which parts they implemented and which were supplied. Using a resource is not automatically a problem; claiming its work as wholly independent authorship would be inaccurate.
Example five: temporary workplace coverage
Weak fictional statement: “Promoted to operations manager.”
Evidence note: The fictional employee temporarily maintained a coordination log during a colleague's absence. The employee's title and approval authority did not change. The assignment lasted a stated period that can be verified.
Revised example: “Maintained the coordination log during temporary coverage from [actual start] to [actual end], recording updates for the responsible manager.”
This wording treats the coverage as relevant experience without inventing a promotion. Replace the placeholders with accurate dates in a real application. If the assignment included additional duties, describe them individually and keep the boundary between temporary work and a formal appointment clear.
A vacancy may value the experience, but the statement does not prove readiness for all management responsibilities. For an internal progression discussion, use the promotion application guide to choose the appropriate request and process.
Example six: explaining a technical procedure
Weak fictional statement: “Led company-wide training and transformed team performance.”
Evidence note: The fictional specialist wrote a short procedure note and explained it to two colleagues who needed help with a recurring task. There was no formal training programme or measured company-wide result.
Revised example: “Wrote a procedure note for a recurring task and explained its steps to colleagues using the process.”
The example can demonstrate written explanation and informal support. It does not become formal staff management or a large training programme simply because helping others involved communication. If the number of colleagues is accurate and useful, it can be included; a number is not necessary merely to make the sentence appear quantified.
Use an evidence-to-wording worksheet
Keep your own drafting notes with the actual setting and contribution. For every candidate sentence, ask whether the verb describes what you did, whether the scope is accurate and whether the claimed result has support. Remove words that imply a wider outcome than your evidence establishes.
| Drafting field | What to record |
|---|---|
| Task and setting | Employment, coursework, practice or temporary coverage |
| Individual action | What you personally did |
| Evidence | An accurate account or permitted supporting record |
| Scope boundary | Team work, approval authority or an unmeasured result |
| Vacancy relevance | The responsibility the statement helps explain |
Read the finished statement aloud and prepare one follow-up explanation. If you cannot explain the method or your own contribution, revise the sentence or investigate the gap. Do not fix uncertainty by adding a stronger adjective.
Questions before copying an example
Must every bullet contain a percentage?
No. Use a figure only when it is accurate, meaningful and appropriate to share. A specific task without an invented metric is useful evidence.
Can practice work appear on a resume?
It can be included where relevant and clearly labelled. Do not present it as paid employment, a real client engagement or production experience.
Should I copy the revised sentences exactly?
Use your own actual work. These are fictional demonstrations of claim repair, not ready-made facts about you. The useful pattern is the connection between evidence, scope and relevant wording.
