The syllabus spans public health principles and communicable disease, water supply and water quality testing, waste management covering both solid waste and sewage, food safety and hygiene inspection, vector control and pest management, housing and environmental sanitation, and the health legislation an inspector works under. HSI is a one-year course but the syllabus reaches across public health, environmental engineering and law, which is wider than most ITI trades. Candidates most often lose marks on the legislation and water-testing sections, because those are the least intuitive and the easiest to leave until last.
