Most RRB JE book lists ignore the part that decides the exam. CBT 1 is a 100-question screening round, but CBT 2 is 150 questions in which Technical Abilities alone carries 100 marks — and that paper is different for mechanical, electrical, electronics and civil candidates. CBT 1 is a screening round — it gets you to CBT 2 and its marks do not carry into the final merit. Maths and general science are 30 marks each, so they matter most here, but do not over-invest: the exam is actually decided in CBT 2.

This is two thirds of the decisive paper and the single most important purchase you will make — and it is branch-specific, so a generic "RRB JE book" cannot cover it. Confirm the discipline you applied under before buying anything here; the exam allots the same marks but sets a different paper for each.

The remaining 50 marks of CBT 2 are spread thin across four small sections, which is exactly why candidates over-buy here. Basics of Computers and Basics of Environment are 10 marks each — they do not justify a dedicated textbook, and a guide chapter plus previous-year questions covers them.

Where books stop
CBT 1 only qualifies you; the merit list is built from CBT 2, where Technical Abilities is 100 of 150 marks. That means preparation weighted evenly across subjects is preparation weighted wrongly. Both papers carry 1/3 negative marking, so guessing is a losing strategy in a technical paper where you either know the concept or do not. Work previous-year technical papers for your own discipline first — they are the clearest signal of depth — then take full timed CBT 2 mocks.
