Reasoning is the single biggest block in the paper and the one most candidates prepare last. Thirty marks out of a hundred sit here, and unlike general science it rewards practice over recall — so if your study time is limited, this is where it buys the most.

25 questions · 25 marks
Group D maths is arithmetic-heavy and pitched around Class 10 — number system, percentage, ratio, time and work, mensuration. The 1/3 negative marking means a guessed question costs you real marks, so accuracy under time matters more than covering exotic topics.

This section is worth as much as maths and is the cheapest to prepare, because it comes almost entirely from NCERT Classes 6 to 10 — which are free. Candidates routinely buy a thick science guide and skip the textbooks the questions are actually written from.

20 questions · 20 marks · the smallest section
This is the smallest block at 20 marks and the one with the worst effort-to-return ratio, because current affairs is unbounded. Cap it: one static reference plus a monthly compilation, and put the time you save into reasoning.

Where books stop
100 questions in 90 minutes with 1/3 deducted per wrong answer means guessing is a losing strategy, and the qualifying bar is 40% for UR and EWS, 30% for SC, ST and PwD. The content is Class 10 level, so the separator is accuracy under time. Work previous-year papers first — they are free — then take full timed mocks. Clearing the CBT only advances you to the PET, so start that alongside.

Common questions
No single book covers the paper. Reasoning is the largest section at 30 questions and deserves a dedicated book such as R.S. Aggarwal; general science comes almost entirely from free NCERT Classes 6–10; maths needs a speed-arithmetic book; and general awareness needs one static reference plus a monthly current affairs compilation. Weight your buying to the section sizes, not evenly.
The CBT is 100 objective questions for 100 marks in 90 minutes, split into General Intelligence & Reasoning (30), Mathematics (25), General Science (25) and General Awareness & Current Affairs (20). Each correct answer gives 1 mark and 1/3 is deducted for a wrong one. Qualifying marks are 40% for UR and EWS and 30% for SC, ST and PwD. Confirm against the current notification on rrbapply.gov.in.
For the science section it covers most of what is asked, and it is free from ncert.nic.in — Classes 6 to 10 are the right range. Add a compact revision book only for the final revision pass, and use a question bank to test recall. NCERT does not help with reasoning or maths speed, which is where a guide earns its price.
The CBT itself is offered in Hindi, English and several regional languages, and Lucent publishes its General Knowledge and Samanya Vigyan in Hindi. Regional-language editions vary by publisher and year, so check the edition before buying rather than assuming the English book has a matching translation.
NCERT Science and Mathematics are genuinely free from ncert.nic.in and cover a large share of the paper. Previous-year RRB papers circulate freely and are the best calibration you can get.
