Resume & Cover Letter

Cover Letter for a Teaching Job in India: Three Adaptable Samples

A teaching cover letter should connect your actual qualifications and classroom experience to the advertised subject, class level and responsibilities. It is stronger when it explains one lesson or teaching decision clearly than when it promises dramatic improvements in every student's marks.

This guide provides three fictional templates for Indian school applications, an evidence worksheet and a submission checklist. They are application-writing examples, not proof of eligibility or records of successful teachers. Use the employer's notice and prescribed application process.

Verify the post's requirements first

Record the exact title, subject, class level, location, qualification, experience and any required eligibility-test conditions. Private-school applications and government recruitment processes may differ. A letter does not replace a mandatory form, selection process or qualifying condition.

The official CTET eligibility guidance explains that eligibility depends on applicable qualifications and recruitment rules, and that being allowed to appear in CTET does not verify eligibility or confer a right to appointment. Do not present a test attempt, an application or a qualifying result as a job offer. Check the specific vacancy's conditions and state your actual status.

Vacancy detailWhat to check before drafting
Subject and classesWhether your qualifications and experience match
QualificationExact degree or training required and completion cutoff
Eligibility testWhether applicable, which requirement and your actual status
ExperienceRequired duration and acceptable experience type
SubmissionPortal, prescribed form, email or other stated channel

Do not infer universal rules for all teaching posts from one sample. Different class levels, institutions and recruitment notices can have different requirements.

Choose a useful classroom example

Describe the learning objective, your teaching approach, how you checked understanding and what you changed. A fresher can use a supervised teaching-practice lesson, clearly identifying it as such.

For example, a fictional candidate might write: “During supervised teaching practice, I used fraction strips to explain equivalent fractions, checked understanding with a short exit task and revised the next lesson for students who needed more practice.” This provides an action and reflection without inventing a marks increase.

Use this worksheet:

Subject and class level:
Employment / supervised practice context:
Learning objective:
My lesson or activity:
How I checked understanding:
What I adjusted afterward:
Evidence I can discuss without identifying pupils:

Protect pupil information. Do not include names, photographs, assessment records or recognisable personal circumstances without an appropriate authorised basis. A cover letter needs a concise professional example, not a bundle of private student data.

Sample 1: fresher with supervised teaching practice

[Name]
[City] | [Phone] | [Email]
[Date]

To: [Principal / Recruitment Team]
[School Name]

Subject: Application for [Exact Teaching Post] — [Reference]

Dear [Recipient],

I am applying for [Post and Subject] advertised on [Official Source].
I hold [Exact Qualification] from [Institution], completed in [Year].
My [Required Test / Training] status is [Accurate Status], as detailed
in the requested application documents.

During supervised teaching practice at [Institution], I prepared and
delivered lessons for [Subject / Class Level]. In one lesson on [Topic],
I used [Activity], checked understanding through [Method] and revised
[Aspect] after feedback from my supervisor.

The vacancy's emphasis on [Responsibility] connects with my experience
in [Relevant Example]. I would welcome the opportunity to contribute
while developing through your school's guidance and feedback process.

My resume and the requested documents are included. I am available from
[Truthful Date] and would be pleased to discuss the role.

Thank you for considering my application.

Yours sincerely,
[Name]

Do not describe supervised teaching practice as several years of independent employment. If a qualification or test result is pending, state that accurately and check whether the vacancy allows it.

Sample 2: experienced subject teacher

Subject: Application for [Subject Teacher Post] — [Name] — [Reference]

Dear [Principal / Recruitment Team],

I would like to apply for [Exact Post]. My qualifications are
[Relevant Qualifications], and my teaching experience includes
[Subject and Class Levels] at [Employer] from [Start] to [End / Present].

My responsibilities included lesson planning, checking understanding
and [Other Relevant Responsibility]. For example, I [Specific Teaching
Action] and used [Assessment / Feedback Method] to decide [Next Step].

Mention a board or curriculum only if you have relevant experience or have honestly described your preparation. Do not claim universal expertise across boards. A team-level improvement in results should not be presented as your sole achievement without supporting evidence.

Sample 3: returning to teaching after a career break

Subject: Application for [Teaching Post] — [Reference] — [Name]

Dear [Recipient],

I am applying for [Exact Post]. I hold [Qualifications] and previously
taught [Subject / Class Levels] at [Employer] from [Start] to [End].

After a career break from [Dates], I am now available to return to
teaching. [Brief explanation, only if relevant and comfortable to share.]
My recent preparation includes [Actual Activity, if any].

In my earlier role, I [Relevant Classroom or Planning Example].
I would welcome the opportunity to discuss how that experience fits
your current vacancy and any orientation or demonstration required.

My resume and requested documents are attached. My availability is
[Truthful Date]. Thank you for considering my application.

Regards,
[Name]
[Phone]

There is no need to invent tutoring, courses or unpaid work to explain a break. Do not disclose more personal information than necessary. The employment gap guide provides additional truthful wording.

Make common claims more specific

Broad claimMore useful evidence, if true
I make learning engagingDescribe an activity and how you checked understanding
I am skilled in classroom managementExplain a routine or responsibility within your experience
I use technology effectivelyIdentify the tool, learning purpose and access constraints
I support different learnersDescribe how you adapted a task or explanation
I work well with parentsExplain your communication role and school process

Do not add a percentage to every example. If you use an assessment outcome, explain the comparison and context and avoid overstating causality. A clear reflection on a lesson can be useful even when no numerical improvement was measured.

Prepare for a demonstration lesson

If the employer requests a demonstration, confirm the topic, class level, duration, audience, available resources and assessment expectations. Prepare a learning objective, a short activity, a way to check understanding and a backup if technology is unavailable.

A cover letter can briefly mention willingness to follow this process, but it should not promise that a demo will secure the job. Do not send pupil work or copyrighted materials you lack permission to distribute as unsolicited attachments.

Final submission checklist

  • The title, subject, reference and school name are correct.
  • Qualifications and test status match my records.
  • Supervised practice, tutoring and employment are distinguished.
  • Classroom examples are true and protect pupil privacy.
  • Claims about results or technology are supported and relevant.
  • Notice period and joining availability are realistic.
  • The required form, channel and document instructions are followed.

Use the application email guide for the accompanying message and the resume error checklist for the attachment. The fresher cover letter guide covers broader structure.

Frequently asked questions

Does every teaching application need a cover letter?

No. Follow the advertised process. A prescribed form may be sufficient or mandatory; an additional letter should not substitute for it.

Can I use the same letter for several subjects?

Only if you actually meet the requirements and tailor the evidence. Do not imply that qualifications for one post establish eligibility for every subject or class level.

Should I mention a CTET or state TET result?

When relevant, state the exact qualification and status truthfully. The recruiting authority determines eligibility under its rules; a sample letter cannot do so.
