Prepare for the actual video format
A video interview can be a live conversation or a request to record responses. The invitation should determine your preparation. Do not assume that a recorded assessment permits unlimited retries, that a live session requires screen sharing or that every platform uses the same controls. Clarify missing instructions through the known recruitment contact.
The purpose of a setup check is to see whether you can hear, speak and display what the assessment actually needs. It is not a guarantee of selection or a score for eye contact, room decoration or visible confidence. A working camera does not replace relevant answers, and a relevant answer should not depend on pretending that a technical problem is absent.
This guide uses original fictional preparation and repair cases. It does not recommend a paid simulator, claim that KarmSakha provides a video assessment service or assert a mandatory employer process. Harvard's interview guidance supports relevant preparation; the invitation checks and scripts here are our own. Harvard interview guidance.
Read the invitation as a set of requirements
Record whether the session is live or recorded, the scheduled time or submission deadline, the time zone and the named service. Check whether instructions mention allowed notes, preparation time, answer length, retries or a required device. If the invitation supplies a practice route, distinguish that from the actual assessment submission.
For a live call, ask about the reconnection route if it is not clear. For a recorded task, check when an attempt begins and what action submits it. Do not test an irreversible submission control merely to learn what it does. A guide cannot establish a service's current rules from its general name.
| Format detail | What you need to establish |
|---|---|
| Live conversation | Joining route, scheduled time and reconnection instructions |
| Recorded response | Deadline, attempt rules and actual submit action |
| Shared task | What may be shown and whether screen sharing is required |
| Permitted support | Notes, references and assistance rules for this assessment |
The table is a worksheet, not an employer's requirement list. If an instruction is already clear, record it instead of asking the same question again. If two instructions conflict, seek clarification before deciding which to ignore.
Check the setup you will actually use
Use the intended device, connection and service where a permitted test is available. Check whether the camera view shows what you intend and whether speech is audible. Position the device so it remains stable while you answer. There is no required camera height or lighting product in this guide; inspect the result instead of buying equipment based on a generic claim.
Review what is visible behind you and what a shared screen could reveal. Remove or avoid exposing personal documents and private work where you can. If screen sharing is required, identify the specific permitted window rather than assuming that your entire desktop must be displayed. Follow the actual platform and assessment instructions.
Do not grant unexpected access simply because a page or caller says it is needed for an interview. Verify the service and recruitment relationship through the invitation. The article does not prescribe browser permission steps or authorise anyone to change your device settings. It helps you identify what needs checking before the real session.
Case one: live audio works but the camera view is unclear
Fictional situation: a candidate can hear and speak during a permitted test, but the camera view is too dark to show their face clearly. The invitation requests a live video conversation. The candidate has an alternative position in the same room and can move the device without changing the service.
Practice repair: adjust the position using the available light, repeat the permitted view check and confirm that audio still works. Record what was checked. Do not infer that a brighter view increases interview odds by a measurable amount. The practical result is a more usable camera view in that test.
If the camera fails during the real session, explain the specific problem and ask whether the interviewer wants to continue in another permitted mode or reconnect. Do not assume that switching to audio satisfies an instruction requiring video. The responsible assessor should confirm the next step.
Possible wording: My audio is working, but the camera is not showing a usable view. Would you like me to reconnect through the agreed route, or is there another permitted way to continue?
Case two: a recorded prompt has an unclear attempt rule
Fictional situation: the invitation states a submission deadline but does not explain whether opening the question begins a timed attempt. A button says start, and the candidate has not found a practice explanation. The article does not supply that service's rules.
Practice repair: read the provided instructions and contact the known recruitment route if the attempt behaviour remains unclear. Do not click start repeatedly expecting a harmless preview. A recorded assessment may have rules that differ from a live call or a practice recorder.
If a permitted practice tool is available, use it to check delivery and device handling without treating practice retries as evidence of actual assessment retries. Keep the fictional or practice recording separate from a submitted answer. No response has been recorded or submitted through an employer's service for this guide.
Possible question: Does opening the prompt begin the timed attempt, and is there a separate practice route? That asks for the missing operational information rather than demanding a rule change or assuming the service will allow another attempt.
Case three: a demonstration would expose unrelated material
Fictional situation: a live interviewer asks a candidate to explain a permitted sample spreadsheet. The candidate's desktop also contains private documents unrelated to the task. The interview instructions permit showing the sample, but do not require displaying those other files.
Practice repair: use the assessment's permitted sharing route and limit what is shown to the intended sample where the service supports that. Check the visible content before continuing. Do not open confidential employer material to create a more impressive demonstration. A sample's purpose is to explain the work you are allowed to show.
If the available sharing method is unclear or would expose something inappropriate, explain the limitation and ask for an alternative allowed route. The guide does not claim that every service supports identical window-sharing controls or that a prepared desktop is a complete privacy guarantee.
Possible wording: I can demonstrate the permitted sample. Before sharing, I need to confirm the view is limited to that material. Is there a preferred sharing route for this task?
Practise an answer with visible evidence
Choose a genuine example and rehearse explaining the contribution aloud. If the assessment includes a demonstration, practise moving between explanation and the permitted visual material. A cursor movement or a slide should support the point rather than hide an unanswered question.
Ask a partner to identify the action you claimed, the evidence shown and anything they could not hear or see. Obtain permission before recording a practice session involving another person. A practice recording is not a reason to secretly record an interview or publish somebody else's contribution.
For audio-specific turn-taking and disconnection scripts, see the phone interview guide. For broader remote preparation, use the remote interview guide. The video work here concerns format and attempt rules, visible material and permitted demonstrations.
Review the actual next step
For a live conversation, record the next action the interviewer states and the confirmed contact route. For a recorded response, inspect any permitted completion or receipt signal according to the service instructions. Upload or submission confirmation does not itself establish that your answer passed the assessment.
Keep a short private record of the format, setup checks, any technical issue and the instruction you followed. Do not convert a smooth recording into a success-rate claim. If something remains unresolved, identify the actual missing information before repeating an action that could affect an attempt.
Common questions
Must I look at the camera continuously?
No universal scoring rule is established here. Keep your explanation clear and use the visible material as the task requires. Do not treat a generic eye-contact instruction as permission to ignore a demonstration or the actual question.
Can I use notes?
Use the assessment's actual instructions. Notes permitted for a conversation do not automatically mean external assistance is allowed in a recorded test. Clarify the rule if it is missing or ambiguous.
What if the practice view differs from the real session?
Explain the specific issue and follow the authorised repair route. A successful practice check establishes only that the tested setup worked then; it cannot guarantee future connection or platform behaviour.
