Last checked against IBM's official careers pages: 10 October 2026.
IBM is unusually clear about how it hires. Its application steps and FAQs page for India sets out each stage, the types of online assessment, how interviews are structured and — importantly in 2026 — exactly how candidates may and may not use AI. This guide turns that official information into a preparation plan, with practice questions and a worked answer.
An earlier version of this article quoted hiring numbers, applicant counts, salary ranges and an unnamed recruiter that we could not verify. We removed them; IBM does not publish those figures on its careers pages.
IBM's hiring steps
| Step | What IBM says happens |
|---|---|
| Application | You apply online for a specific role and can check your status in the candidate portal |
| Screening | IBMers with expertise in your field review your application, skills and experience |
| Online assessment | You may be asked to complete one or two assessments, which vary by role |
| Interview | If you complete the assessments successfully, you may be invited to an interview by phone, video or in person, or to an assessment centre with a group exercise and an in-person interview |
| Decision | After the final interview, IBM shares its decision; if you accept an offer, it sends documentation and guides your onboarding |
IBM notes that the process may vary by location and region, that there is no overall timeframe it can share, and that with the volume of applications it is not always possible for recruiters to contact every applicant directly.
Keep preparing
Continue with Top 50 Interview Questions₹299 — coaching के एक महीने से काफ़ी सस्ता / far cheaper than a month of coachingThe three online assessments
IBM describes three types, and you may get one or two of them:
- Coding assessment: multiple-choice questions or coding challenges, depending on the role, to gauge your programming knowledge and ability.
- Video assessment: you answer interview questions on camera and microphone.
- English language assessment: text-based multiple-choice questions on English proficiency.
If you have a disability, IBM says you can confidentially self-identify and request an accommodation or adjustment for the assessments.
Preparing for a recorded video answer
A one-way video answer feels odd because nobody reacts. Use a 90-second structure:
- Context (15 seconds): the situation in one or two sentences.
- Your action (45 seconds): what you did, specifically.
- Outcome (20 seconds): what happened and how you know.
- Link (10 seconds): why it matters for this role.
Record yourself three times on the same question, and watch for pace, filler words and whether you look at the camera.
How IBM interviews
IBM's FAQ says it uses structured or behavioural interviews, with questions tied to the technical skills and behaviours required for the role. Its advice is specific: prepare examples of when you proved those skills and, "most importantly, think of outcomes" — what you achieved, how you measured success and what role you played. It may also ask about your short-, mid- and long-term career goals. For technical roles, IBM suggests practising on sites such as LeetCode, Pramp and HackerRank to prepare for both the coding assessment and the technical interview.
Worked example: making an answer outcome-focused
The question: "Tell me about a time you improved something."
| Version | Answer |
|---|---|
| Weak | "In my internship I worked on improving a dashboard. It went well and my manager was happy." |
| Strong | "In my internship (fictional example), the team's weekly sales dashboard took about 40 minutes to refresh because it re-read the full history each time. I suggested loading only new records and wrote the query and a test to compare totals with the old method. Refresh time fell to about 5 minutes, which I measured over four weekly runs, and the totals matched every time. My part was the query and the test; my mentor approved the change and deployed it." |
The strong version answers IBM's three prompts: what was achieved (40 to 5 minutes), how it was measured (four runs, matching totals) and the candidate's exact role.
Practice questions
These are our practice prompts for early-professional technical roles.
"Explain IaaS, PaaS and SaaS." In the definitions published by NIST in Special Publication 800-145, infrastructure as a service gives the consumer processing, storage and networks on which to run any software, including operating systems; platform as a service lets the consumer deploy their own applications using the provider's languages and tools without managing the underlying infrastructure; and software as a service lets the consumer use the provider's applications. A simple way to remember it: the further along the list, the less you manage.
"Write SQL to find each department's highest salary."
SELECT department_id, MAX(salary) AS top_salary
FROM employees
GROUP BY department_id;
Then explain how you would also return the employee's name — for example with a window function such as RANK() partitioned by department — and how ties would be handled.
"How would you debug an API that is suddenly slow?" Reproduce and measure first; check recent changes; look at logs and metrics to find which step is slow (database, external call, application code); test one hypothesis at a time; confirm the fix with the same measurement.
Behavioural: "Describe a time you learned a new technology quickly." "Tell me about a disagreement in a team project." "Where do you see yourself in three years?"
IBM's rules on using AI as a candidate
IBM's FAQ on acceptable AI use is worth reading in full before you apply.
| IBM permits AI for | IBM prohibits AI for |
|---|---|
| Improving grammar, formatting, clarity and tone of resumes and cover letters | Generating entire resumes, cover letters or responses without personal input |
| Understanding job descriptions or technical concepts | Completing assessments, technical tests or coding challenges |
| Interview preparation and mock interviews | Use during live interviews or real-time assessments |
| Brainstorming questions to ask | Presenting AI-generated work as entirely your own without disclosure |
IBM encourages candidates to disclose significant AI assistance in submitted materials; minor grammar and formatting edits do not need disclosure. Treat the assessment and interview as strictly your own work.
After an offer, and staying safe
IBM's FAQ says selected candidates receive an offer letter and, after accepting, access to a pre-start site, followed by a welcome session called Start at IBM. On fraud, it states that IBM Talent Acquisition does not use personal email domains such as gmail.com or yahoo.com, and that all legitimate correspondence comes from an ibm.com address. Do not share personal or financial information with anyone contacting you otherwise, and report scams to local law enforcement.
Final checklist
- Apply for a specific role and track it in the candidate portal.
- Prepare for coding, video and English assessments, depending on your role.
- Build four to six stories that state outcomes, measurements and your exact role.
- Practise coding on the kinds of sites IBM itself suggests.
- Use AI only in the ways IBM permits — never during assessments or interviews.
- Trust only messages from ibm.com addresses.
