Railway Group D PET: CEN 09/2025 Standards and Readiness Checks

Railway Group D preparation includes more than the computer-based examination. Candidates called for the Physical Efficiency Test need to understand the exact events, qualifying standards and instructions for their recruitment cycle. A fitness routine copied from a different railway or police recruitment can prepare you for the wrong test.

This guide focuses on the Level-1 PET in CEN 09/2025, with a practical notice-reading and readiness checklist. It does not provide a personalised exercise prescription or predict when an individual will be called.

Editorially revised on 8 October 2026.

Match the requirements to your CEN

The source is the official CEN 09/2025 detailed notice, paragraph 14.2, pages 28–29. It describes a qualifying PET with carrying first, then running after a recovery gap for candidates who pass the carry.

EventMale standardFemale standard
Carry35 kg, 100 m, 2 minutes20 kg, 100 m, 2 minutes
Run1,000 m, 4 min 15 sec1,000 m, 5 min 40 sec

Each event allows one chance. The carry must be completed without putting the weight down. The notice applies female PET standards to transgender candidates. It specifies PET exemptions for eligible PwBD, Course Completed Act Apprentices and ex-servicemen; the other applicable recruitment and medical requirements remain.

These are CEN-specific rules, not a universal railway fitness standard. Read the relevant exemptions and individual instructions in full. Do not substitute a 1,600-metre run or an unrelated height-and-chest chart for these events.

Keep recruitment cycles separate

Check the CEN on your application, result notice and call letter. CEN 08/2024 and CEN 09/2025 are different recruitments even when both are described informally as Group D. A notice from one does not establish your date or status in the other.

Official RRB and RRC websites provide cycle updates; the current RRB Chennai site is one official entry point. Use the responsible authority's instructions for your application and location. Do not treat a social-media schedule or another candidate's message as your call letter.

Record the document date and any later corrigendum. If two official documents appear inconsistent, seek clarification through the stated official channel rather than choosing the more convenient instruction.

Understand what qualifying means

The PET checks whether the prescribed events are passed. A good CBT score does not remove a required PET, and completing a practice run is not an official qualification. Equally, an exemption must be established through the applicable rules and documents, not assumed from a broad category label.

The recruitment includes CBT, applicable PET, document verification and medical examination. Qualification at one stage does not guarantee appointment. Keep the selection process distinct from your preparation progress so you do not interpret a practice milestone as a recruitment outcome.

If you are uncertain about an exemption or post-specific medical condition, consult the relevant paragraphs and official instructions. This general guide cannot determine your individual eligibility or medical fitness.

Prepare a notice-to-action sheet

Before arranging practice or travel, make a small sheet using verified documents. This helps identify an unanswered question before it becomes an exam-day problem.

Leave an item marked “unconfirmed” until you have evidence. Do not fill a missing date from a timetable for another region. Keep copies of the notices you relied on, alongside the call letter when issued.

Separate knowledge, practice and health readiness

There are three different checks: knowing the rules, practising relevant tasks safely and being fit to attempt the official test. Reading this article addresses the first check; it does not establish the other two.

Discuss an appropriate preparation approach with a qualified trainer or clinician when needed, especially if you have an injury, medical condition or uncertainty about attempting the events. A generic twelve-week plan cannot assess your starting point or guarantee safe readiness.

Do not begin with a maximum-load trial merely because the official weight is printed in a table. Use suitable facilities, supervision and an approach appropriate to your circumstances. Avoid improvised heavy objects or unsafe surfaces. This article does not set training loads, intensity, recovery times or nutrition instructions.

Measure practice accurately

A practice record is useful only when it describes what happened. Note the date, measured distance, time, conditions and whether the event met the relevant rules. Distinguish a complete measured event from an approximate route or a shortened session.

For the carry, a practice note should identify the load, distance, elapsed time and whether the weight was put down. Do not count an interrupted carry as equivalent to the official condition. For running, record the measured distance rather than assuming any local circuit is exactly one kilometre.

These are documentation suggestions, not instructions to perform a maximal test. A trainer can help decide what practice is appropriate. A stopwatch result from an informal session does not override official assessment.

Use arithmetic as a check, not a prescription

The male running limit of 4 minutes 15 seconds is 255 seconds for 1,000 metres. The female limit of 5 minutes 40 seconds is 340 seconds. Dividing those totals by five gives an even-pace arithmetic reference of 51 or 68 seconds per 200 metres.

Those figures are calculations from the notice, not a personalised pacing recommendation. They do not account for your fitness, track layout, weather or official start procedure. Do not infer that keeping one split in an informal practice guarantees passing the complete event.

For the carry, 100 metres in two minutes is a condition covering the required event, not a separate untimed sprint. Read how the official test will be conducted rather than inventing an additional event.

Check call-letter logistics

When a call letter is issued, verify the venue, reporting time, identity requirements and any specified clothing or permitted items. Read whether an entry deadline differs from the event time. Plan travel using the actual location, not a centre guessed from a previous CBT.

Keep required documents organised and ensure the details match your application. Do not assume that every PET requires the same certificate list or that a screenshot of a message replaces the prescribed call letter.

If a health or personal circumstance affects attendance, follow the official procedure and seek appropriate professional advice. Avoid relying on an informal promise of a second chance or a blanket claim that failing PET creates an automatic one-year ban; future eligibility depends on the actual rules.

Keep CBT study and PET planning distinct

For written preparation, use the RRB Group D practice hub and preparation resources. These are academic preparation resources, not PET coaching or medical assessment.

Do not let one preparation track obscure the other. Keep a separate CBT error log and PET document/readiness checklist. Your official status still comes from the recruitment authority, regardless of what a practice platform records.

Frequently asked questions

Is weight carrying optional?

It is part of the prescribed PET for candidates to whom the test applies. Check exemptions against the exact notice rather than omitting the event yourself.

Is there an extra 100-metre sprint?

The 100 metres in this PET table is the carrying distance. Do not add an unrelated sprint event from another recruitment.

Does passing PET guarantee a railway appointment?

No. The remaining selection, verification and medical requirements still apply. Follow the official results and instructions for your cycle.
