A student resume can show useful evidence before you have a full-time job. Education, coursework, projects and activities belong on it when they help explain what you can contribute to the particular role. The challenge is to describe those experiences accurately: a classroom project is not client work, and an expected degree is not an awarded qualification.
Begin with the actual vacancy, gather your own examples and choose a simple structure that makes their context visible. This guide includes a complete original fictional resume and a project record you can inspect. It is a writing exercise, not a real applicant, institution or successful application.
Choose evidence before choosing a template
Read the required qualifications and skills separately from the duties. A role that permits enrolled students is different from one requiring a completed degree by a specified date. A resume can explain relevant experience; it cannot change that condition.
For each requirement, identify one fact you can support. This could be an awarded qualification, a genuine internship task, your part of a group project or a piece of writing you completed. If you have no example for a skill, leave it as a learning need rather than copying it from the job description.
Harvard's resume guidance recommends factual, specific descriptions relevant to the position. It also recognises that international resume conventions vary. Use these writing principles without assuming every Indian employer asks for the same headings, length, photograph or academic marks.
Follow application instructions for file type and requested information. A clear layout helps readers follow your evidence, but neither a template nor a keyword guarantees an interview or a screening score.

Our fictional student, Sana, is enrolled in a Bachelor of Arts programme at Example College, with expected completion in July 2027. Example College is a teaching label, not an actual institution or recognition claim. Sana has no employment or internship in the supplied record.
In a September 2026 course project, her group prepared a resource list for a fictional exhibition. Sana's individual task was to organise ten supplied entries by format, check that their titles matched the brief and flag missing creator information. Another group member wrote the descriptions. The tutor reviewed the submitted group list; Sana did not publish it or measure visitor use.
Her work record shows six print entries and four digital entries. Two entries lacked creator information and were flagged for clarification. Missing creator fields are a separate attribute: an entry can be digital and also have a missing creator. The counts describe a ten-entry exercise, not a ten-person audience or an improvement result.
A separate coursework record establishes that Sana wrote a short exhibition introduction and revised its opening after tutor feedback. No award, competition ranking, software certification or commercial outcome is supplied.
Turn the project record into resume bullets
A supported bullet is:
Organised ten supplied resource entries into six print and four digital items, checked titles against the project brief and flagged two missing creator fields.
That sentence states the task, its scope and a known output. It does not say that Sana wrote all descriptions or verified the missing creators. A second bullet can describe the coursework:
Wrote a classroom exhibition introduction and revised the opening following tutor feedback.
Avoid turning these into “managed a public exhibition,” “increased attendance” or “led the whole team.” Those claims require evidence that the record does not contain.
You do not need a percentage for every bullet. The number ten explains the exercise size. The two flagged fields show a check performed, but they are not a defect-reduction rate: there is no before-and-after comparison or verified correction outcome.

Relevant capabilities
Resource classification, title checking, missing-information flags, short-form writing and revision following feedback.
No internship section appears because none is established. No named tool is listed because the record does not specify one. In your actual resume, name the systems and languages you can genuinely use and explain their level when needed. An empty “Experience” section is less useful than an accurately labelled project section.
Tailor the same record to two different opportunities
Fictional Opportunity A permits enrolled students and asks for clear short writing and careful organisation of supplied information. Sana's coursework is relevant to those criteria. A targeted version can place the writing exercise before the resource-list project if writing is the main duty. It should retain the enrolment status and the coursework labels.
Fictional Opportunity B requires an awarded bachelor's degree and professional publication experience. Neither is established. Sana cannot change “expected July 2027” to “graduate” or describe tutor review as professional publication to make the document match.
The supplied briefs do not establish opening dates, pay, location, working hours or complete selection criteria. A limited connection between coursework and a role is not overall eligibility or an offer. Check the full actual advert before applying.
For planning the search around your study commitments, use the separate student job search guide. This page focuses on how to present your evidence.
A changed-input check
Suppose the brief changes one previously printed resource to digital. The format counts become five print and five digital, still ten total. If the creator fields have not changed, two remain flagged. Only the format sentence needs the new counts; you cannot say the missing creator issue has been resolved.
Now suppose a source confirms one missing creator. One field remains unresolved. Update the project record before changing its description. If your role was only to flag the missing fields and someone else obtained the confirmation, keep that distinction when explaining the project.
This exercise models the final resume check: changes in one part of your evidence should not create unsupported claims elsewhere.
What to include when you have more experience
For a genuine internship, use the actual title, organisation and dates. Explain what you personally did and which outcomes are established. If you worked in a team, identify your contribution without erasing collaborators. Do not rename observation as independent responsibility.
For an activity, describe the specific work. Membership alone does not establish leadership; being elected to a position does not establish every claimed result. Include an award or competition outcome only with its correct name, level and date.
For academic marks, follow the employer's requirements and use the official scale. Do not select only favourable components while presenting them as an overall grade. If marks are required in a form, omitting them from the resume does not remove that requirement.
A portfolio link can help when it is relevant, working and authorised to share. Use fictional or permitted material for samples; do not publish private group records, customer information or restricted coursework files simply to demonstrate a skill.
Review the document before submitting
Check education status, dates, names and personal ownership against your records. Replace all placeholders. Open the exported file and inspect the application preview for paragraph or formatting errors. Read any requested statement separately rather than assuming the resume answers it.
Keep the saved vacancy and submitted version together. If you adapt the resume for another opportunity, repeat the requirement check. Changing only the employer name is not enough when the qualifications or duties differ.
Do students need a summary?
A short profile can help connect relevant coursework to the target role, but it is not compulsory for every application. Avoid repeating a long list of adjectives that the rest of the document does not demonstrate.
What if I have no work experience?
Use truthful coursework, projects or activities that show relevant actions. State their context. Learning exercises are valid evidence of practice, not proof of employed experience or business outcomes.
Should I list every skill from a vacancy?
Only list skills you possess and can explain. Keep missing capabilities as questions or learning goals. The employer's wording can improve clarity when it accurately describes your work; it cannot create experience.
Can the same resume serve every application?
Keep a factual master record, then select the most relevant sections for each role. Preserve the facts while changing emphasis. The resume writing guide offers general structure, and the career-change cover letter guide shows how a separate letter can explain a connection without inventing qualifications.
