SBI PO study material
SBI PO follows IBPS-style patterns — use proven banking references plus SBI-specific awareness revision through mocks and notes.
Official syllabus
100 marks · qualifying only · identical subjects to IBPS PO
SBI PO prelims tests the same three subjects as IBPS PO — English, reasoning and quantitative aptitude — which is why almost every search here is for “IBPS and SBI PO books” rather than SBI alone. One set covers both. What differs is difficulty: SBI consistently sets harder questions, so the fix is more practice at higher difficulty, not different textbooks.
| Book | Author / publisher | Covers | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quantitative Aptitude for Competitive Examinations | R.S. Aggarwal | Quant | The same arithmetic base that serves IBPS PO prelims. |
| Analytical Reasoning | M.K. Pandey | Reasoning | SBI leans harder on puzzles and seating than IBPS does. |
| Objective General English | S.P. Bakshi | English | Shared across every banking prelims you will attempt. |
230 marks including descriptive · 75% of the final rank
Mains is where SBI PO stops being a harder IBPS PO. It carries 230 marks including a descriptive paper, and it contributes 75% of the final rank. Data Interpretation depth and banking awareness are the two areas prelims never touches and Mains punishes.
| Book | Author / publisher | Covers | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Data Interpretation | Arun Sharma | Data analysis | The Mains skill — dense caselets rather than plain arithmetic. |
| Banking Awareness | Arihant / any current publisher | Banking & economy | Absent from prelims, tested in Mains and again in the interview. |
| Descriptive English | S.P. Bakshi & Richa Sharma | Descriptive | Letter and essay formats for the written component of Mains. |
50 marks · 25% of the final rank · psychometric test, group exercise, interview
This is the stage that genuinely separates SBI from IBPS, and no book list mentions it. SBI adds a psychometric test and a group exercise alongside the interview, and Phase III carries 25% of your final rank. It rewards clarity of thought and awareness rather than anything you can revise from a guide the night before.
| Book | Author / publisher | Covers | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Banking and economy current affairs | Any current publisher | Interview | The interview draws on banking, economy and current awareness. |
| Group discussion and interview guides | Any current publisher | Group exercise | Format familiarity so the group exercise is not your first attempt at one. |
Where books stop
SBI PO prelims is qualifying only; the final rank comes from Mains at 75% and Phase III at 25%. That makes SBI the banking exam where a strong written score can still be undone late, because the psychometric test, group exercise and interview together carry a quarter of the outcome. If you are attempting both SBI and IBPS PO, share the prelims books, then prepare SBI Mains at higher difficulty and start on the Phase III format early rather than after your Mains result.

Common questions
For prelims, effectively yes — the subjects are identical and one set of quant, reasoning and English books serves both, which is why most searches ask for IBPS and SBI PO books together. SBI sets harder questions, so add higher-difficulty practice sets rather than different textbooks. The exams diverge properly at Mains and Phase III.
Prelims is 100 marks and qualifying only. Mains carries 230 marks including a descriptive paper. Phase III adds a psychometric test, a group exercise and an interview worth 50 marks. The final rank is built from Mains at 75% and Phase III at 25%. Confirm against the current notification on sbi.co.in.
The prelims pattern is the same but SBI consistently sets a higher difficulty level, and the selection process adds stages IBPS does not have — a psychometric test and a group exercise. IBPS PO weights the final selection on Mains and interview; SBI weights it 75:25 between Mains and Phase III.
