NDA books & study material
The NDA written exam is 900 marks — Mathematics 300 and the General Ability Test 600 — and the SSB interview is worth another 900. Half your final merit is decided by a five-day interview no textbook prepares you for the way it prepares you for maths, which is the part most NDA book lists leave out entirely.
Official syllabus
120 questions · 300 marks · 2.5 hours · +2.5 correct, −0.83 wrong
NDA maths sits at Class 11 and 12 level — algebra, trigonometry, calculus, vectors and statistics — and the marking is unusually punishing: each correct answer is worth 2.5 marks but each wrong one costs 0.83. That ratio means informed skipping beats blanket attempting, which is a habit you build from practice rather than reading.
| Book | Author / publisher | Covers | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mathematics for NDA and NA | R.S. Aggarwal | Maths | Topic-wise coverage matched to the NDA syllabus with graded practice. |
| NCERT Mathematics (Classes 11–12) | NCERT | Foundation | Free official source — the NDA syllabus is drawn from exactly this. |
| Pathfinder for NDA & NA | Arihant | Maths + GAT | One volume across both papers if you would rather not buy separately. |
200 of the GAT's 600 marks · +4 correct, −1.33 wrong
English is a third of the GAT and is the most improvable part of the whole written exam, because it rewards vocabulary and grammar accuracy rather than recall. The negative marking here is the heaviest on the paper at 1.33, so a guessed comprehension answer is expensive.
| Book | Author / publisher | Covers | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Objective General English | S.P. Bakshi | Grammar & usage | Standard grammar and usage coverage for the GAT English section. |
| Word Power Made Easy | Norman Lewis | Vocabulary | The vocabulary book most NDA candidates actually finish. |
| NDA previous year English sections | Arihant | Practice | Calibrates how much vocabulary depth is genuinely required. |
400 of the GAT's 600 marks · physics, chemistry, science, history, geography, current events
This is the largest single block in the written exam at 400 marks, and it is broader than most candidates expect — physics and chemistry carry real weight alongside history, geography and current events. The science half comes from NCERT, which is free, so spend on the reference you will revise rather than on a second science guide.
| Book | Author / publisher | Covers | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| NCERT Physics & Chemistry (Classes 9–12) | NCERT | Science | Free official source and the direct origin of the science questions. |
| Lucent's General Knowledge | Lucent | History & geography | Static GK backbone for the humanities half of the section. |
| Monthly current affairs compilation | Any current publisher | Current events | Recency matters more than the brand; a free monthly PDF suffices. |
900 marks · equal to the entire written exam · five-day process
The SSB interview carries the same 900 marks as the whole written paper, so half your final merit is decided here — and almost no NDA book list mentions it. It is a five-day process of psychological tests, group tasks and a personal interview. Books help you understand the format and stop you being surprised, but they cannot substitute for practice and honest self-assessment.
| Book | Author / publisher | Covers | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Let's Crack SSB Interview | SSBCrack | Full SSB process | Walks through all five days so nothing on the schedule is a surprise. |
| Breaking the Code of SSB Psychological Tests | Arihant | Psychological tests | Explains TAT, WAT and SRT formats, which is where unprepared candidates lose most. |
| Current affairs and defence awareness | Any current publisher | Personal interview | The interview draws on awareness of current and defence affairs. |
Where books stop
Final selection is out of 1800 — 900 for the written and 900 for the SSB interview. Candidates routinely spend a year on maths and GAT and walk into a five-day interview cold, which is the single biggest avoidable loss in NDA preparation. The marking also punishes guessing hard: −0.83 per wrong answer in maths and −1.33 in GAT, so timed practice matters as much as coverage. Work previous-year papers, then start reading about the SSB format well before you clear the written.

Common questions
Arihant's Pathfinder for NDA & NA is the most widely used single volume across both papers. If you prefer separate books, R.S. Aggarwal for mathematics, S.P. Bakshi for GAT English and Lucent for general knowledge is the common combination, with free NCERT covering the physics and chemistry that carry real weight in the GAT. Add an SSB book before the interview stage, not after.
Two papers: Mathematics with 120 questions for 300 marks, and the General Ability Test with 150 questions for 600 marks, each lasting 2 hours 30 minutes. Maths awards 2.5 marks per correct answer and deducts 0.83 for a wrong one; GAT awards 4 and deducts 1.33. The written exam totals 900 marks and the SSB interview carries a further 900, for a final merit out of 1800. Confirm against the current notification on upsc.gov.in.
For the mathematics syllabus and the physics and chemistry inside the GAT, NCERT Classes 9 to 12 is the correct source and it is free. It is not enough on its own: NDA maths needs objective practice at exam speed, GAT English needs a dedicated grammar and vocabulary book, and nothing in NCERT prepares you for the SSB interview that decides half your merit.
It is worth 900 marks — exactly the same as the entire written exam — and the final merit is out of 1800. A strong written score does not carry a weak SSB performance. It is a five-day process covering psychological tests, group tasks and a personal interview, and it rewards preparation for the format rather than last-minute reading.
NCERT Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry are genuinely free from ncert.nic.in and cover a large share of both papers. UPSC publishes previous-year NDA question papers free on upsc.gov.in.
