Clerk study material
Curated clerk-level banking book list focused on prelims speed — share PO books for mains depth when you advance.
Official syllabus
Prelims and Mains · arithmetic and DI at clerk level
Clerk quant is arithmetic-led and does not reach the Data Interpretation depth PO Mains demands. The most common overspend here is buying PO Mains material for a clerk attempt — speed and accuracy at moderate difficulty is what actually scores.
| Book | Author / publisher | Covers | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quantitative Aptitude for Competitive Examinations | R.S. Aggarwal | Foundation | Arithmetic base at the level clerk prelims and Mains ask. |
| Fast Track Objective Arithmetic | Rajesh Verma (Arihant) | Speed | Shortcut methods for the sectional clock. |
| IBPS Clerk maths practice sets | Any current publisher | Practice | “Math practice set for IBPS clerk” is a real search — and the right format. |
Prelims and Mains · puzzle-heavy
Puzzles and seating arrangement dominate clerk reasoning, which is why “puzzle practice set for IBPS clerk” is one of the most-searched phrases in this cluster. A general reasoning book gets you started; puzzle-specific practice is what raises the score.
| Book | Author / publisher | Covers | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| A Modern Approach to Verbal Reasoning | R.S. Aggarwal | Foundation | General base covering the standard question types. |
| Analytical Reasoning | M.K. Pandey | Puzzles & seating | The puzzle and arrangement depth clerk papers lean on. |
| IBPS Clerk puzzle practice sets | Any current publisher | Practice | Timed puzzle sets — the single highest-return practice for this exam. |
Prelims and Mains · objective only, no descriptive test
Clerk English is objective throughout — there is no descriptive paper, unlike PO. That makes a grammar and vocabulary reference sufficient, and a descriptive-writing book unnecessary.
| Book | Author / publisher | Covers | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Objective General English | S.P. Bakshi | Grammar | Covers the objective grammar and comprehension the paper asks. |
| Word Power Made Easy | Norman Lewis | Vocabulary | Vocabulary building that carries to every other banking attempt. |
Mains only · banking awareness plus computer knowledge
Mains adds two sections prelims never tests: general and banking awareness, and computer knowledge. Computer aptitude in particular is a small, finite syllabus that candidates either score nearly full marks on or ignore entirely — it is among the cheapest marks in the exam.
| Book | Author / publisher | Covers | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Banking Awareness | Arihant / any current publisher | Banking awareness | Static banking concepts and terminology for the Mains section. |
| Objective Computer Awareness | Arihant / any current publisher | Computer | A small finite syllabus — the best marks-per-hour on the paper. |
| Monthly banking current affairs | Any current publisher | Current affairs | The awareness section leans recent rather than static. |
Where books stop
IBPS Clerk has no interview stage, so unlike PO your Mains score is effectively the selection. Prelims is 100 marks in 60 minutes and only qualifies you; Mains is 200 marks in 120 minutes and adds general awareness and computer knowledge that prelims never tested. Because everything rides on one paper, sectional timed practice matters more here than in exams with a later stage to recover in. Work previous-year papers, then full timed Mains mocks.

Common questions
R.S. Aggarwal or Fast Track for quant, M.K. Pandey for puzzles and reasoning, S.P. Bakshi for English, and a banking awareness plus computer awareness guide for Mains. Skip the descriptive-English books written for PO — clerk has no descriptive paper.
No. IBPS Clerk selection is based on prelims and Mains only, with no interview stage. That is the main structural difference from IBPS PO, and it means your Mains performance carries the entire outcome.
Prelims is 100 marks in 60 minutes covering English, reasoning and quantitative aptitude. Mains is 200 marks in 120 minutes covering reasoning, quantitative aptitude, English, general awareness and computer knowledge. Prelims is qualifying only. Confirm against the current notification on ibps.in.
For prelims, yes — the quant, reasoning and English material is effectively the same. Do not buy PO Mains material for a clerk attempt: PO adds Data Interpretation depth and a descriptive writing test that clerk does not test, so that spending returns nothing.
