THIRTY-THREE PER CENT RESERVATION WILL OPEN NEW AVENUES FOR WOMEN’S POLITICAL LEADERSHIP: LOK SABHA SPEAKER

The inauguration of the All-India Capacity Building Workshop 'Gender-Responsive Governance' by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on September 7, 2026, in Faridabad marks a pivotal moment in India's journey toward women-led development. The constitutional foundation for such affirmative action traces back to Articles 15(3) and 16(4), which empower the State to make special provisions for women and socially and educationally backward classes, while Article 243D and 243T already mandate 33% reservation for women in Panchayats and Municipalities since the 73rd and 74th Constitutional Amendments (1992).
