UPSSSC PET 2026: The Exam, Its Pattern, Marking, How the Score Is Used, and a Strategy
The Preliminary Eligibility Test (प्रारम्भिक अर्हता परीक्षा), better known as PET, is not a recruitment examination in the usual sense. Nobody is appointed to any post on the basis of PET alone. It is a gate: the Uttar Pradesh Subordinate Services Selection Commission (उत्तर प्रदेश अधीनस्थ सेवा चयन आयोग, UPSSSC) uses the PET score to decide who may apply for, and who is shortlisted for, the separate Main Examinations (मुख्य परीक्षा) it later advertises for Group C posts. That single fact changes how you should prepare. PET rewards a high score, not merely a pass, because the score is what carries forward, and it rewards breadth, because 100 one-mark questions are spread over fifteen subject heads. This chapter reads the official documents for the 2026 cycle line by line — Advertisement No. 16-Exam/2026 dated 01-08-2026, its corrigendum of 01-09-2026 and the two exam-date notices of September 2026 — and turns them into arithmetic you can use: how negative marking changes the value of a guess, how much time each head deserves, how the score is used for three years, and how to divide your remaining preparation weeks among the chapters of this book.
KarmSakha preparation topics covered
- What the Preliminary Eligibility Test is and why every Group C aspirant under UPSSSC must take it: the two-tier examination system
- Who may sit PET-2026: educational qualification, the age window on 01 July 2026 and the age relaxations printed in the advertisement
- The paper itself: 100 questions, 100 marks, 2 hours, 15 subject heads, NCERT-level difficulty, and the 2026 exam dates and shifts
- Negative marking of one-fourth mark: net score, break-even accuracy, and when an educated guess is worth taking
- Normalisation across shifts, the three-year validity of the score, and the 'highest valid score' rule used for Main-exam shortlisting
- A 120-minute time plan built from the 15 heads, and a head-by-head map of where marks are cheapest
- An 8-week and a 4-week preparation plan using this book, and the exam-day rules that can cancel a candidature
Where Every Pattern Fact in This Book Comes From
Exam patterns change, and coaching summaries copy one another's mistakes. So every figure about PET-2026 in this chapter — the number of questions, the marks per head, the duration, the penalty for a wrong answer, the age limits, the validity of the score — is taken from the Commission's own documents and cited to them. The governing document is Advertisement No. 16-Exam/2026 (विज्ञापन संख्या-16-परीक्षा/2026), Preliminary Eligibility Test (PET)-2026, dated 01-08-2026. It is a 13-page scanned document signed by the Secretary of the Commission; section 10 of it, 'Examination scheme and syllabus' (परीक्षा योजना एवं पाठ्यक्रम), sets out the paper and its conditions.
Three later documents amend or add to it. A corrigendum (शुद्धि-पत्र) dated 01-09-2026 extended the last date for registration, fee payment and online submission from 01-09-2026 to 07-09-2026 and said that every other condition of the advertisement stays as it was. Notice No. 1303 dated 09-09-2026 fixed the written examination for 23, 24 and 25 October 2026. Notice No. 1423 dated 25-09-2026 then moved it, 'for unavoidable reasons', to 25 October 2026 (Sunday), 30 October 2026 (Friday) and 01 November 2026 (Sunday), with two shifts each day: 10:00 am to 12:00 noon and 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Admit cards, the notice says, will be announced separately on the website.
Two habits follow from this. First, when a coaching video or a message group quotes a different number, check it against the advertisement rather than against another summary; the advertisement is short enough to read in one sitting. Second, dates and administrative details (admit-card release, centre allotment, answer keys, results) are announced only on the Commission's website, upsssc.gov.in. Paragraph 13.11 of the advertisement says in so many words that the Commission does not correspond with candidates individually and that candidates should keep checking the website. Everything in this chapter is correct as of 26 September 2026; anything the Commission notifies later overrides it.
PET and the Two-Tier System: What the Score Is For
Since 2020 the Uttar Pradesh government has recruited to Group C (समूह 'ग') posts within UPSSSC's jurisdiction through a two-tier examination system (द्विस्तरीय परीक्षा प्रणाली). The advertisement traces it to Government Order No. 1103/47-का-3-2020-13/17/2020 dated 20 November 2020, read with Government Order No. 316/47-का-3-2025 dated 28-04-2025. Tier one is PET, a common test for everyone. Tier two is the post-specific Main Examination, advertised separately whenever departments send vacancies to the Commission. Paragraph 2.1 makes PET compulsory: every candidate who wants to be selected for any of these vacancies must take part in it.
Which posts are 'within the jurisdiction'? Paragraph 3 quotes section 2 of the Uttar Pradesh Subordinate Services Selection Commission Act, 2014: the Act covers directly recruited posts below Group B, that is Group C posts, including secretariat posts and Group C posts in boards, corporations and other statutory bodies set up or controlled by the state government. A 2014 notification under the Act placed in the Commission's remit all direct-recruitment posts from pay band-1 (₹5200-20200) with grade pay ₹1900 upwards, up to posts below grade pay ₹4600 in pay band-2 (₹9300-34800). In everyday terms these are clerical, assistant, technical-assistant and field posts in state departments — the Lekhpal, Junior Assistant and forest-guard type of vacancy.
The GO of April 2025 reshaped how the score is used, and the advertisement quotes it. PET is to be held every year; the marks obtained are valid for the next three years; and if a candidate holds more than one valid PET score when applying under a Main-exam advertisement, the candidate may apply on the basis of the highest valid normalised score (सर्वाधिक नार्मलाइज्ड अंक), and shortlisting for that Main exam is done on that highest valid normalised score (paragraphs 2.2 and 3.3, and the note under section 7). Section 12 adds that the score is effective for three years from the date the Commission issues the result or uploads it on its website.
Two limits are written just as clearly. Paragraph 2.3 says that merely applying for PET, sitting it, or receiving a result or score card gives no claim to be considered for any post. Paragraph 8.4 says that holding the qualifications in the PET advertisement does not by itself entitle anyone to apply under a later Main-exam advertisement: each Main advertisement fixes its own minimum qualification and age limits from the department's requisition and service rules. A candidate with a high PET score but without, say, the typing or technical qualification a particular post demands cannot apply for that post. Check the qualifications of the posts you want early, so that you acquire them in time.

|---|---|---|
| Is PET compulsory? | Yes, for every candidate seeking selection to Group C vacancies in the Commission's jurisdiction | Para 2.1 |
| How often is PET held? | Annually (वार्षिक रूप से) | Para 2.2 |
| How long is the score valid? | 3 years from the date the result is issued/uploaded | Section 12; para 2.2 |
| Which score counts if I have more than one? | Your highest valid normalised score, for applying and for shortlisting | Paras 2.2, 3.3; note to section 7 |
| Does a PET score give a right to a post? | No | Para 2.3; para 8.4 |
| Who decides eligibility for a Main exam? | Each Main-exam advertisement, per the department's requisition and service rules | Para 8.4; note to section 7 |
Who May Sit PET-2026: Qualification, Age and Relaxations
The educational bar is deliberately low. Section 7 of the advertisement admits any candidate who holds High School (हाईस्कूल, class 10) or an equivalent qualification, provided it was obtained before the last date for submitting the application. Higher qualifications are not needed for PET itself, though the application form asks whether you hold an Intermediate qualification, and many Main-exam posts will need more. Paragraph 13.03 adds a rule that matters later: only the date of birth recorded on your High School (or equivalent) certificate is accepted, and no other document can be used to prove age.
The age window is fixed on a single reference date. Under paragraph 8.1, a candidate must have completed at least 18 years of age on 01 July 2026 and must not have attained more than 40 years on that date. A candidate born on 15 July 2008 is still 17 on 01 July 2026 and is not eligible. Candidates who cross 40 may still apply if a relaxation applies to them. Paragraph 8.2 lists the relaxations in the upper age limit: for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes and other categories, as many years as the government specifies; 5 years for skilled players of recognised games (GO dated 28.11.1985); 15 years for persons with disabilities (दिव्यांगजन, GO dated 3 February 2008); and 5 years for Uttar Pradesh government employees working in state services (GO dated 27-08-2013).
The ex-servicemen rule is a calculation, not a flat bonus, and it is worth understanding exactly. Paragraph 8.2 gives former soldiers a 3-year relaxation on the condition that, after their entire service period is subtracted from their actual age on 01 July 2026, the remaining age is not more than 3 years above the prescribed maximum. With a maximum of 40, the test is: actual age minus total service must not exceed 43. A 50-year-old with 8 years of service passes (50 − 8 = 42), while a 50-year-old with 6 years of service does not (50 − 6 = 44). Paragraph 8.3 allows candidates who claim a further relaxation under a department's service rules, a GO or a High Court order to apply with full details, at the risk of cancellation if the claim fails at the Main, document or selection stage.
Reservation (आरक्षण) works at the Main-exam stage, not in PET. Section 9 says that vertical reservation for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes and Economically Weaker Sections, and horizontal reservation for dependants of freedom fighters, ex-servicemen, persons with disabilities, outstanding sportspersons and women, will be available in the Main-exam advertisements under the laws, orders and service rules then in force. Paragraph 13.01 asks reserved-category candidates of Uttar Pradesh to state their category in the PET application. Applications were accepted only online, through One Time Registration (वन टाइम रजिस्ट्रेशन, OTR) on upsssc.gov.in, from 03-08-2026 until the extended last date of 07-09-2026; the Commission also notes that it will use Aadhaar authentication of candidates at different stages of its future examinations.
