Reviewed: 9 October 2026. This salary guide retains its historical URL and supplies a dated Indian company legal-role pay reference, followed by complete original package comparisons. The employer example is a PSU in-house legal appointment. It is not a national corporate-lawyer average or a private-law-firm salary survey.
Start with a reference whose role and pay measure are clear
The POWERGRID Officer Trainee (Law) 2025 notice, advertisement CC/06/2025 dated 23 October 2025, distinguishes training and regularisation. It states training basic pay of ₹40,000, with extant IDA, HRA and perks at 12% of basic. After successful training and regularisation, the Officer (Law) E2 scale is ₹50,000–3%–₹1,60,000 (IDA).
It gives approximate annual CTC of ₹11 lakh during training and ₹22.5 lakh after successful training, varying by posting and appointment terms. Its package and service-agreement conditions must be read together. The notice's tentative application window was in November–December 2025; it is a historical remuneration example, not a new opening.
| Pay measure | Historical POWERGRID reference |
|---|---|
| Training basic | ₹40,000 |
| Regularisation scale | ₹50,000–3%–₹1,60,000 (IDA), conditional on the stated transition |
| Approximate annual training CTC | ₹11 lakh |
| Approximate annual post-training CTC | ₹22.5 lakh, subject to terms and posting |
The employer has identified a particular legal role and package. Keep that identity visible rather than treating the amounts as what every law graduate, private associate or corporate counsel earns.
Keep preparing

A basic-pay figure and a CTC figure describe different measures. The reference does not make ₹11 lakh fixed annual cash or establish a monthly take-home amount. Components, conditions and payment timing must be read from the actual package.
The scale's upper endpoint is not a promised day-one amount. Do not turn ₹1,60,000 into a universal senior-lawyer monthly salary or divide the scale into an invented experience ladder. Successful training and regularisation are stated conditions, not events that have occurred for every reader.
The notice's benefits and service agreement are employer-specific terms. This guide does not judge legal enforceability, recommend signing a particular agreement or establish a tax or deduction calculation. Obtain the actual written terms relevant to your offer.
A government-owned company legal-role reference can be useful when clearly scoped. It cannot answer a private law firm's compensation policy or establish the whole-India median for corporate lawyers.
Label arithmetic equivalents accurately
₹11 lakh is ₹11,00,000 annually. Dividing by twelve gives approximately ₹91,666.67. ₹22.5 lakh is ₹22,50,000 annually, whose divided-by-twelve equivalent is ₹1,87,500.
These are arithmetic monthly equivalents of the notice's approximate annual CTC. They are not monthly basic pay, gross cash payslips or net pay. Do not compare the ₹91,666.67 equivalent directly with the ₹40,000 basic-pay figure as if both describe money paid on the same basis.
For a compensation note, write: “Historical PSU legal-role reference; training basic and approximate CTC are separately labelled. Personal offer and monthly cash breakdown not established.” That retains the useful numbers and their limits.
If you need a cash comparison, ask for the component breakup instead of making a deduction estimate from CTC alone. An advertised annual amount may include elements whose cash treatment is not established by the headline.
Compare two complete original fictional legal-role packages
The following offers are wholly invented. They are not POWERGRID, law-firm market data or actual candidate outcomes. Suppose two fictional company legal-support offers state these components:
| Component | Offer A | Offer B |
|---|---|---|
| Recurring fixed annual cash | ₹12,00,000 | ₹13,20,000 |
| Conditional annual bonus, maximum | ₹2,00,000 | ₹1,20,000 |
| One-time joining payment | ₹1,00,000 | ₹0 |
| Employer-listed annual benefit component | ₹1,20,000 | ₹1,20,000 |
| First-year sum at maximum bonus | ₹16,20,000 | ₹15,60,000 |
A's sum is ₹12,00,000 + ₹2,00,000 + ₹1,00,000 + ₹1,20,000 = ₹16,20,000. B's is ₹13,20,000 + ₹1,20,000 + ₹0 + ₹1,20,000 = ₹15,60,000.
The sum includes a conditional maximum and an employer-listed component whose cash treatment is unknown. It is not all guaranteed recurring cash. Offer B has ₹1,20,000 more fixed annual cash even though A has the larger first-year component sum.
The example is useful because every included amount has a label. It does not establish that either fictional offer is legally appropriate, market-leading or best for a particular candidate.
Check a zero-bonus case and the later-year comparison
With zero bonus and assuming the joining-payment conditions are met, A's first-year fixed-plus-joining cash is ₹13,00,000. B's fixed cash is ₹13,20,000. B is higher by ₹20,000 in this specific comparison.
In a later year with no joining payment and zero bonus, A has ₹12,00,000 recurring fixed cash and B has ₹13,20,000. B is higher by ₹1,20,000. A's one-time ₹1,00,000 must not be counted again without evidence of another payment.
Dividing the supplied fixed annual cash by twelve gives ₹1,00,000 for A and ₹1,10,000 for B. These remain arithmetic equivalents, not take-home estimates or promises about payroll timing.
If you compare maximum-bonus totals, state that assumption. If the actual bonus is unresolved, do not record it as guaranteed. A transparent comparison can keep a conditional amount visible without pretending it is zero or certain.
Ask for the remaining package information
A complete original clarification request could read:
Thank you for explaining the legal-role package. Before deciding,
could you confirm the written breakdown of recurring fixed cash,
the annual bonus conditions and any one-time joining payment?
Please identify the employer-listed benefit component and explain
which amounts are paid cash, when they are paid and which conditions
apply. I would also like to understand the role's employment and
service-agreement terms before treating the first-year headline as
recurring compensation.
The request does not invent a competing offer, market median or entitlement to a revision. It asks for information that the fictional component table does not supply.
If the reply confirms fixed cash but leaves bonus conditions unanswered, record “fixed cash confirmed; bonus conditions unresolved.” A request sent is not a breakup received. A breakup received is not acceptance of the offer.
Ask the actual employer about the actual arrangement. Do not import POWERGRID's historical training conditions, benefits or service agreement into a private company's offer merely because both roles involve law.
Research another legal role with the same discipline
Record the employer, body date, title, location, experience basis, qualification requirements, employment status and pay measure. Check whether the figure is basic, fixed cash, CTC, a stipend or a range. If a source omits an important field, preserve that uncertainty.
Do not blend a trainee package, a litigation retainer and a company counsel appointment into one experience-band table without a defensible dataset. A role title alone does not establish identical responsibilities, benefits or hours.
This review did not establish a reliable national corporate-lawyer average or city-by-city private-firm range. The specific official reference is more useful than a fabricated general table, but its scope must remain explicit.
The salary negotiation guide shows how to make a bounded request and handle a partial or unchanged response. Use it after understanding the written package, without applying an automatic increase percentage.
Keep the source date and later evidence separate
Finding a 2025 notice in 2026 does not change its publication date. If you later find a new official package, record it as new evidence instead of silently updating the old notice's figures.
Likewise, an annual CTC estimate in a historical recruitment is not your personal offer. A current written offer may have different terms; use that document for the actual decision rather than assuming the old advertisement applies.
Common corporate-lawyer salary questions
What is the national average? No defensible national average was established in this review. The POWERGRID example is a specific historical PSU legal-role reference.
Does ₹22.5 lakh CTC mean ₹1,87,500 take-home monthly? No. Division gives an arithmetic CTC equivalent, not net pay.
Is the top of a scale the starting salary? Do not treat a scale endpoint as a personal starting amount.
Is a larger first-year total always better? Separate recurring, conditional, one-time and other components and compare actual terms.
Does this guide decide whether to sign a service agreement? No. It identifies package questions without giving a personal legal judgement.
