Salary conversations are easier when you know what you are comparing and can explain your request clearly. In India, a headline CTC figure can include different components across employers. Establish the role, pay structure and conditions before deciding whether an offer meets your needs.
This guide provides adaptable scripts for expected-salary questions and offer discussions. All numerical examples are fictional comparisons, not market salary benchmarks or take-home estimates. No script guarantees an increase, and some employers use fixed packages.

Prepare before the first salary question
Record the responsibilities, level, location and working arrangement of the role. Compare current advertised ranges for similar jobs where available, and note the date and source of each observation. Separate annual fixed pay from total CTC and identify whether the advertised range includes variable compensation.
Do not average unrelated roles simply because they share a title. A startup analyst role, a specialist role and a position with shift requirements may involve different expectations. Self-reported salary data can provide context, but it may mix locations, experience levels and compensation definitions.
Decide privately what conditions you need, what you would prefer and what you can trade off. Include working hours, commuting costs and any relocation responsibilities. Your personal minimum is a planning boundary, not evidence that an employer must match it.
Keep preparing

If the role or package is still unclear, ask for the budget and compensation structure. Remain constructive rather than treating every question as a confrontation.
I would like to understand the responsibilities and pay structure before giving a precise expectation. Could you share the budgeted range and whether it refers to annual fixed pay or total CTC?
If the recruiter needs a range, give one you can explain using comparable roles and your relevant evidence. Define the component and avoid presenting the top of the range as a guaranteed entitlement.
Based on the responsibilities discussed and the comparable roles I have reviewed, I am considering a range of [your researched range] for annual fixed pay. I am open to discussing the overall package and the role in more detail.
Do not insert an arbitrary percentage increase because a previous employer paid a particular amount. A range should reflect the opportunity, your evidence and your actual decision criteria. If an application requires a number, read its instructions and state the compensation basis clearly where possible.
Discuss current salary truthfully
Employers differ in how they ask about compensation history. This article does not assert a universal Indian legal right to refuse disclosure or a universal obligation to provide it. You can ask why the information is needed and try to bring the discussion back to the role budget.
My current package has several components, so I would prefer to compare this opportunity on its responsibilities and annual fixed pay. Could we first review the budget for the role?
If you choose to disclose, distinguish fixed, variable and one-time amounts accurately. Do not inflate your salary, alter documents or invent another offer. If asked for sensitive documents, verify the employer and understand the purpose and handling process before sharing them.
Separate CTC from the amounts you can compare
Request a written breakdown. Depending on the employer, the package may include fixed compensation, variable incentives, employer contributions, insurance, a joining bonus or other benefits. Do not assume that every item is cash paid to you each month.
| Component | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Fixed compensation | What is the annual amount and payment schedule? |
| Variable pay | What determines payment, and is any portion guaranteed? |
| Joining bonus | When is it paid, and are there repayment conditions? |
| Employer contributions | Which items are included in the stated CTC? |
| Equity | What is granted, what are the vesting terms and what can be realised? |
| Benefits | What coverage or reimbursement is provided, and who is eligible? |
Ask the employer for an illustration of payroll deductions and clarify its assumptions. Do not treat a generic online estimate as a confirmed take-home figure. Tax and statutory treatment depend on applicable rules and your circumstances; seek qualified advice for an individual calculation.
Work through a comparison before countering
Consider these fictional offers, simplified for illustration:
| Item | Offer A | Offer B |
|---|---|---|
| Annual fixed pay | ₹8,00,000 | ₹8,50,000 |
| Target annual variable pay | ₹1,00,000 | ₹50,000 |
| One-time joining bonus | ₹50,000 | None |
| Sum of these listed first-year components | ₹9,50,000 | ₹9,00,000 |
Offer A's listed first-year total is larger, but Offer B has ₹50,000 more annual fixed pay. The target variable amount is not assumed to be earned, and the joining bonus is not recurring. Neither total is a take-home amount or a complete CTC unless the employer confirms that nothing else is included.
You would still need to compare role fit, working hours, benefit terms, bonus conditions and the cost of relocation or travel. Do not conclude that one offer is universally better from this table alone.
Negotiate after receiving a clear offer
Harvard's offer guidance recommends obtaining written terms, researching compensation, considering benefits and discussing changes before committing. Its advice supports general negotiation practice; it does not establish Indian employment law or tax treatment.
Thank the recruiter, express your interest and make a specific request supported by the role and your relevant evidence. A long list of demands can obscure your main priority.
Thank you for the offer. I am interested in the role, particularly [specific responsibility]. Based on [relevant experience or researched comparison], would you be able to review the annual fixed pay to [your requested amount]? I would appreciate discussing what flexibility is available.
Use your own evidence. An actual work outcome can help explain your contribution; an invented competing offer or unverifiable achievement undermines the conversation. Give the employer space to respond and ask when you should expect an update.
Respond when the package is fixed
Some graduate hiring programmes, public-sector recruitments and internal pay structures have standardised compensation. Verify the particular rules instead of assuming negotiation is available.
If the employer confirms that pay is fixed, ask about a condition that matters to you and can genuinely be discussed, such as the joining date or working arrangement. Do not assume each item is flexible.
Thank you for clarifying the pay structure. Could we discuss [specific condition]? It affects my ability to accept, and I would like to understand the options before deciding.
A future review is different from a guaranteed increase. If the employer offers a review, ask about timing, criteria and who decides the outcome. Record what is confirmed without converting an informal statement into promised compensation.
Close the conversation with written terms
Before accepting, check the legal employer, title, reporting arrangement, location, start date and compensation schedule. Read probation, notice, bonus repayment and any relevant restrictions. Request clarification of ambiguous wording before you commit.
Thank you for confirming the revised terms. Could you send the updated written offer showing [agreed component] and [agreed condition]? I would like to review the final document before confirming my decision.
If the offer does not meet your needs, decline courteously. You do not need to invent a competing offer as an explanation. Be mindful of stated deadlines and ask for additional review time when necessary; the employer may or may not grant it.
For the broader interview conversation, practise common HR questions. If the opportunity is remote, also use the remote offer checklist.
Frequently asked questions
Can a fresher negotiate?
Ask whether the package permits discussion. Prepare relevant evidence and respect a confirmed standardised structure. Being a fresher neither guarantees flexibility nor rules it out for every employer.
Should I use a fixed percentage increase?
Use the role, comparable compensation and your priorities. A percentage based only on previous pay may not describe the value or structure of the new opportunity.
Is a verbal agreement enough?
Request written confirmation of material terms and check that the final offer matches the discussion before accepting.
