Problem-Solving Skills: Define Repair and Check a Finite Result

Define the repair before claiming the problem is solved

Problem-solving skills can be demonstrated through a clear expected output, relevant constraints, a justified repair and checks against the actual result. A useful account explains what was wrong and what changed. It also keeps unresolved facts visible instead of turning a plausible explanation into a confirmed cause.

Editorial review: 9 October 2026. This guide uses an original fictional draft-card repair. The records, people and review responses are supplied only for practice. They are not customer information, an actual event or verified workplace outcomes. The exercise does not measure a psychological trait or predict salary, hiring or business results.

In real work, identify which artifact you can edit and who can authorise a change or release. The ability to correct a draft does not establish authority to change its source record, approve a public notice or decide another person's outcome.

Establish a finite expected output

In this invented exercise, Adil is checking four internal draft cards against a supplied source record. Coordinator Nila owns the source decisions and release authority. Adil can edit the draft. The agreed instruction is unchanged throughout the exercise: use confirmed source values, mark required unknown values as unresolved, and submit the draft for review.

The cards have identifiers V1, V2, V3 and V4. The relevant field for V1 is a start time; its source says 11:00, while the draft says 10:00. V2 has a location field; its source is unknown, while the draft says Hall A. V3 has a title field, “Introduction,” which matches its source. V4 has a set-number field, 2, which also matches its source.

No reason for the two mismatches is supplied. The record does not establish who entered the values, whether a tool failed or whether an earlier source was different. It supplies enough information to define a draft repair, but not to assign a root cause or a person's responsibility.

Inspect the starting artifact

Card and relevant fieldSupplied source versus starting draft
V1: start timeSource 11:00; draft 10:00, a mismatch
V2: locationSource unknown; draft Hall A, an unsupported value
V3: titleSource Introduction; draft Introduction, a match
V4: set numberSource 2; draft 2, a match

V1 needs a correction to a known value. V2 needs an unresolved marker and a source question, not a guessed replacement. V3 and V4 should remain as supplied unless another authorised instruction changes them. This is a bounded task with four specified fields; it is not a full audit of an event or production database.

An original problem statement is:

The four-card draft contains one value that differs from its confirmed source and one location not supported by a source. The required output must correct the known mismatch, keep the location unresolved, preserve the two matching fields and go to Nila for review. No release approval is supplied.

That statement makes the repair testable. “The process is inefficient” would be too broad for the supplied evidence, and “someone was careless” would invent a cause.

Compare two possible repairs against the same instruction

Adil considers two proposals. Proposal A is to correct V1 to 11:00 and replace V2's unsupported location with an unresolved marker, while preserving V3 and V4. Proposal B is to correct V1 and keep Hall A on V2 because a filled field looks more complete.

Proposal B fails the agreed source requirement. A plausible location is not a confirmed one, and completeness of appearance is not the expected output. Proposal A meets the supplied requirements for these fields if the actual revised artifact preserves them correctly.

This comparison does not prove that manual editing is better than automation in general. No automatic tool, implementation or error rate is supplied. A different real task may use another permitted method, but its output still needs to satisfy the applicable requirements and unknown-value policy.

The University of Michigan Engineering project-assessment guidance discusses problem definition, requirements, alternatives, selection criteria and prototype testing in educational engineering work. It supports that narrow learning context. The fictional cards and checks here are original, not a reproduction of its rubric or a universal employer assessment.

Request the missing fact without filling it yourself

Adil asks Nila for the source decision on V2's location. The exercise supplies no answer confirming a location at this point. He therefore leaves the location unresolved in the revised draft. Sending the question is an action; it is not a completed source resolution.

Do not treat Hall A as correct merely because it was already present. Its presence is part of the problem record. Do not copy a location from another card, erase the field or silently invent a value unless the actual authorised instruction permits that action.

In a real task, use the appropriate owner and permitted communication route. Record the answer actually received and the artifact it affects. Avoid sharing private source records with an external tool to infer a missing value.

Run before-and-after checks on the repaired draft

The original fictional continuation supplies the actual revised values: V1 is 11:00; V2 reads “Location unresolved”; V3 remains “Introduction”; V4 remains 2. These are observed exercise outputs, not merely the intended repair.

Check against the unchanged requirementResult in the supplied revised draft
V1 equals the confirmed source11:00 matches the supplied source
V2 does not invent a locationUnresolved marker present; Hall A removed
V3 matching title preservedIntroduction remains
V4 matching set number preserved2 remains

Those four checks pass for the supplied artifact. They do not show that every other field is valid or that an automatic system will behave correctly on different inputs. The missing location remains missing, so “all information confirmed” would still be inaccurate.

The exercise then explicitly says Nila reviews the V1 correction and V2 unresolved marker and accepts those two aspects of the draft. It does not supply whole-document approval, a confirmed location or public release. Adil's account should preserve that narrower review result.

Describe the result and its limits together

A complete original report could read:

I compared four specified draft fields with the supplied source. I corrected V1 from 10:00 to the confirmed 11:00 and replaced V2's unsupported Hall A with an unresolved-location marker. V3 and V4 stayed at their matching source values. The four field checks passed on the revised draft. Nila accepted the V1 correction and V2 marker at review. The location and full release decision remain unknown, and the record does not establish why the mismatches occurred.

The report describes a completed finite repair and actual checks. It does not claim faster operations, happier visitors, prevented losses or a permanent process improvement. None of those outcomes is supplied by correcting this draft.

For an interview, use your own permitted real example and keep the same distinction between actions, checked output and later outcomes. Do not present Adil's fictional task as your work history. See analytical skills for separating recorded facts from explanations that still need evidence.

Test a separate variation without rewriting the first result

In a second original practice variation, the confirmed source for V1 is itself unavailable. V2 remains unknown; V3 and V4 still match their sources. This is a new input, not a later event supplied in the first exercise.

Under the same requirement, V1 now needs an unresolved marker and a source request rather than the earlier 11:00 value. The first exercise's correct answer cannot be transferred to the new unknown source. V3 and V4 remain preserved, and both unknown fields stay visible.

This variation tests whether the proposed method respects missing information. It does not establish tool reliability, broader operational performance or the cause of a real error. A further confirmed source response would need to be supplied before either unknown becomes resolved.

Questions before calling a repair complete

Must I identify a root cause first?

The supplied record establishes mismatched fields, not their origin. You can describe the bounded authorised repair without inventing a cause. If the actual task requires a cause investigation, collect the necessary evidence through the relevant process.

Is a marked unknown a failed repair?

Not under this exercise's instruction. Preserving an unresolved location is the required behaviour when its source is missing. It is different from claiming that the location has been confirmed.

Does a passing check approve release?

No. Field checks and release authority are separate. The fictional review accepts two aspects and leaves the wider decision unspecified.

What should I retain for the next step?

Keep the expected output, original and revised values, actual checks, source request and bounded review response. The next action should address the remaining source or approval dependency. It should not erase an unknown simply to make the record appear finished.
